Parenting after a Loss

Bottle drying rack vs sterilizer

We received both of these.  Should I keep both or is that redundant?  Which did/do you prefer?

Re: Bottle drying rack vs sterilizer

  • You don't want to sterilize too much, or else you'll kill the good germs too.  We have a drying rack and once a week I use the Medela steam bags to sterilize.

  • I use the sterilizer as storage for the bottles even if they aren't being sterilzed. I sterilzed after every feeding until 6 months and now just wash in the dishwasher and maybe sterilze for a deep clean one every few weeks. The rack came out of the box and sat there taking up space.

  • Neither? It was way easier to throw stuff in dishwasher. We started handwashing everything, but then we got lazy :)

  • I used the dishwasher most of the time, but had a drying rack for my pump parts and "just in case". I had a steam bag too, but I rarely used it. I boiled nipples on the stove for first use. And I boiled my pump parts as needed also.

  • Drying rack - yes. Sterilizer? Have never seen one and have never used. I've occasionally sterilized my pump parts in the Medela bags in the microwave. That's about it.

This. I guess I probably bombarded my kid with germs because we never sterilized, save for the first time on things. We alternated with both hand washing and dishwasher. This is totally my opinion, and don't want to step on any toes, but I'm one of those who feels that sterilizing everything, hand sanitizers, anti-bacterial EVERYTHING, is really not a good thing at all. Obviously there are times when this is necessary - take Clayli's preemie twins, or a patient who's immunocompromised. I think we're really doing ourselves a disservice as a whole. Megan got bottles that were just hand washed, I dropped her binkie and cleaned it in my mouth, she chewed on my keys, and I fed her food from my own fork. Maybe I'm just lucky that she literally never got sick, but I prefer to believe that (within reason) I exposed her to a good mix of good/bad bacteria. ::steps off soapbox:: So to answer your question, I'd return the sterilizer and keep the rack. Definitely not both.

  • I sterilize after every use (boil on the stove) and then place on the drying rack. I thought about using the dishwasher but Pedi suggested we wait until 6months.

  • I still use my bottle drying rack (for storage). We went from using it for Medela pump parts & bottles/nipple/caps to now Avent bottles/nipples/caps. Love this one:

I didn't get a sterilizer. I used the Medela microsteam bags. You can put pump parts, bottles, nipples, pacifiers etc in it and microwave with 2oz water. Each bag has 20 uses and you can get them at BRU, Target.

Dishwasher baskets are a good idea, too. I use 2 of them religiously.

  • I use(d) both. A lot. We sterilized pump and bottle parts daily (I EP'd until last week). Now, bottle parts go in the dishwasher. I like the drying rack for stuff that's still damp from the dishwasher. But, I'm an admitted and unashamed germophobe, too. I think what you will use all depends on what kind of cleaning process works for you and what you have time for.
