Total PW: The rollercoaster continues

You are all probably getting sick of me talking about this. Tell me to shut it if you are but...

We have hope!! This crazy rollercoaster is swinging up for now. My OB had given me the name and number of the pharmacy that currently compounds their p17 and I decided to call them and see when they would stop producing the drug and how long it would be good for thinking that maybe I could stockpile to save some money at least.

Well, at first he thought I worked for the pharm company and was trying to get info. Once I told him my story he was super helpful. For now he can continue to compound it because it's suspended in sesame oil and not castor oil like the patented one. He also said he'd be willing to play with the dosage a bit to go around the patent for us too. It's good for 90 days only but once we find out we're pregnant we can start ordering in advance and stockpiling just in case.

I still need to talk to my OB and MFM about it but things may be looking up.

That is excellent news!  I was wondering how some of the pharmacies were getting around it.  Both of the pharmacies I previously ordered 17HPC from said they couldn't make it anymore.  But, they both used castor oil.

Good luck, hon!  I'm so glad you finally got some good news!

  • Hey!  I'm meeting with an MFM at the University of MD and will specifically be asking about what they think about Makena and it's price and how to get around it. A Dr. there was quoted in one of the early articles so I'm sure she's aware of the situation and I hope they have options for patients such as myself.

I don't believe that insurance can deny you an FDA approved drug because of cost so I'm assuming that you're not covered for Makena becaue you lost twins, right?  That's why I'm not covered.  I CAN'T go through another loss before I get coverage.  I just CAN'T.

My insurance plan simply doesn't cover drugs at that price level. I don't qualify for Makena's assistance program because of the twin loss and our income level is just over their cut off.

I completely feel you on not being able to go through this again ever for any reason. I also can't live with myself if I don't take the drug during the next pregnancy and something goes wrong. It's a crappy place to be for sure.

I hope you get some good answers and a good plan at the doctor.
