Trying to Get Pregnant

I am fired up now

1. My health insurance does not cover any kind of infertility treatments or medication.

2. Home birth is not covered is any capacity.

3. Hospital birth has a $500 deductible plus a 20% copay.

4. The midwife of my choice is out of network, therefore subject to a 25% copay for all visits/care, versus their doctors that are covered at 100% with no copay at all.

I want to start lobbying for women's rights! This makes me so angry!

Re: I am fired up now

  • That sucks. I'm so sorry.

  • the midwife thing isn't women's rights. it's the way health care plans are set up. you obviously have an hmo, and that's what you get for a cheaper price tag.

consider joining a ppo. they cover more and have lower copays. your premium will be higher, though.

  • Seriously??  That's so annoying, Erika!

  • See, that is what sucks. We have a PPO!
  • That sucks, I'm sorry!  Do you have the option to change to a different plan?

  • REALLY?

ok, so the midwife i guess then doesn't work with your carrier. that sucks. still not your plans fault, but sucky consequences.

the hospital fees seem really high, though. must be a low-cost plan?

  • Not really. DH's job just got bought out, so the plan might change, who knows? Totally sucks arse.
  • Sadly most insurance does not cover Infertility unless you live in a state where it is mandated. All my IF stuff is OOP. Maternity is only covered 80%. Yet abortions and vasectomies are covered 100%. Sucks ass.

  • Wow, that is total BS.
  • I joined Aflack a little over a year ago because the company I work for does not have paid maternity leave. So far I have found Aflack rules!! We will see how it is when I do have a baby.

Sorry you are feeling enraged!! Go get a hot chocolate...that always makes me calm down!

  • I just feel angry that I cannot make my own choices on where to have my baby, and who will attend me while I do so. Health insurance is motivated by money, and giving birth at home is so much cheaper. What the hell?
  • giving birth at home is also a risk. if there were a complication, the cost of getting the baby or you to a hospital and into surgery would be through the roof. it's more cost effective to have you close in case of a what-if.
  • for a healthy uncomplicated pregnancy, giving birth at home is NOT high risk. So many people think that because they don't know the facts. If there is an emergency, midwives have the necessary medication and equipment to handle it, and 911 is  just a phone call away.
  • See if you company offers an HSA.  Mine doesn't cover IF (but very few companies do)  Accenture and Starbucks are the only 2 that I've heard of recently.

My HSA lets me decide who and when I go to the doctor.  I pay 100 of the bill up to the first $4K (but my company gives me $2 to use so it is only $2K out of pocket) and once the deductible is met they pay 100%.   My premiums are lower than HMO's or PPO.  Also any $$ that my company gives me this year that I don't use are rolled over next year and I get another $2K from my company and these are dollars that I can use even after I leave the company for any medical related expense - similar to a flexible spending account but it rolls over)

ie.  I used $750 this year then I have $1250 to used next year making my out of pocket only $750 to meet my deductible.

  • we don't have one. =(
  • And what's really ridiculous is that a home birth is WAY cheaper- you'd think insurance companies would be all over that! They suck.

So true! Everyone should watch "The Business of Being Born" it's a documentary with Ricki Lake about home births and natural births. It is really interesting and it makes you want to have an all-natural home birth (and this coming from a girl who hates any kind of pain!)
  • Exactly! Why expose yourself and your baby to the germs of a hospital? Birth is not a disease that needs to be managed!
