My dog gave birth to five happy, healthy, and strong Chihuahua puppies today.
Y'know, I just can't get excited for this. She should have been spayed.
Understandable, to each his own. It wasn't just some accident though and we don't plan on breeding her again. I'm just happy she's safe and healthy and so are the puppies.

You're really lucky she had a good birth, especially with a chi. I think it's worse that it wasn't an accident though. This is why people think stupid "teacup" chis are small, when they're really standard. Uncontrolled backyard breeding with non-standard dogs.
I get the whole spay/neuter thing (my pets are) and I'm all about being a responsible pet owner and animal control. Buuuuut.....sounds from Renee's caring post that the dog and the puppies are in a good home. And my gut tells me she will make sure the puppies are placed in good homes where they will be adopted into a loving family. Like a pet...kind of like your pet. I don't see a problem with this.

7 million animals are put to sleep each year in our country alone. Most of them come from intentional breedings such as these. The people "just want to see their dogs be mothers," or "experience the miracle of birth," or "my dog is cute!" I don't care if she finds good homes. She just killed 5 other dogs in shelters by taking away their homes.

This is only if those homes that those five puppies are going to will go to owners WILLING to adopt from shelters. Many people choose not to adopt from shelters. Especially people that don't have shelters near them. Everyone is entitled to want a pet that they choose, whether it be from a breeder, a friend, or a shelter.
Edit: On top of that, I don't think she "killed 5 other dogs", that's a harsh a rude comment to someone who is so loving of her pets to share the news with her nesties.

We're both about to be mother's and maybe school yard fights are better left for our children. Sometimes your opinions are better left unsaid. I have been an adoptive pet owner, a foster pet owner, volunteered with pet services as a teenager, and donated plenty for hurricane relief. I know the consequences of Chihuahua birthing and is why I had my mother there who had a degree is pre-veterinary medicine and is an experienced breeder. How dare you tell me I just killed 5 other animals because my dog had her own? That's as heartless as someone telling you by having a child you're abandoning another who could be adopted. Way to get someone upset over a joyful moment. You should be ashamed of yourself for adding such a gut-wrenching line.

You're right, we're both going to be mothers and I'm going to teach my children about responsible pet breeding, which does not include what you just did to your dog. I hope my children stand up for what they believe is right.
Shame on you for your background in fostering and still breeding your dog. I'm not the one that should be ashamed.

I hope that that didn't come across as though I was looking for praise. I hate the idea of people clumping me in the idea of being one of those pet owners who using their dog as a fashion accessory. Infact, my dog Bella.. Although purebred, was adopted from a family who couldn't take care of her and she was going to go to a pound where she very well would have been put down due to overcrowding of the local pet shelters. I drove 20hrs. in under 36hrs. (Orlando to New Orleans and back) to get her. She is my whole entire life and I love my dog more than anything. I would have never let anything harm her or hurt her.

I'm gonna blow this off for the simple fact that its gonna lead to my assuming you're saying I won't raise my children correctly and like you, I'm hormonal and can too be a ***.
The reall sad thing here is that you just don't know why what you did is wrong. People like you, Backyard breeders, destroy breeds over time. Was your dog judged to be conformationally correct? Did she have her OFA done for hips and elbows and a CERF done on her eyes? Has she been tested for the epilepsy gene? Has the dog you bred her with? If not, you are passing on bad traits that ruin breeds.
The same reason that springer spaniels have Rage (a form of epilepsy) in their lines, the same reason that Boxers only have an 8 year lifespan because of genetic cancers, the same reason that 95% of cavalier spaniels have heart disease before the age of 5...those things are caused by irresponsible breeders breeding their dogs because they think their dog is "nice", even though the dogs have not been proven to meet the breed standard and have not been health tested.
I run a breed rescue, and ALL of the dogs we get into rescue came from people like you, who just wanted puppies, who thought their dog was nice and that they would give them good homes. But they didn't require spay and neuter contracts, they didn't have a clasue saying that the dogs MUST be returned to them if given up for any reason during their lifetime, they didn't screen their owners properly, they didn't have health testing done....and now the dogs end up in rescue. When people move, have kids, and the dogs have no place to go? They end up in rescue. When people decide to breed those puppies someday, it's a vicious cycle that is the MAIN reason that 7 million dogs are put to sleep every year for lack of homes.
The ONLY people who should be breeding are people who have done ALL health testing and genetic research of their dog's lines, who prove that their dogs are good examples of the standard through temperament testing and conformation (dog shows) or other titles. Backyard breeders such as yourself destroy breeds and ARE the reason so many dogs die in shelters.
Since you've already made this mistake, PLEASE require a spay/neuter contract for these puppies so that they do not continue to pass on unproven genes, and PLEASE require tht they be returned to you for any reason, so that they do not burden the shelter system and rescues like mine. And PLEASE do your research before breeding again. I don't doubt that you are an animal lover, but that doesn't mean that your ignorance about the subject of breeding wont ruin breeds and be the cause of all those deaths.

No, you can probably just get over yourself and your grammar PSA's. This is a PUBLIC board. People can talk however they want, whether in proper English, slang, txt speak, whatever they want. Find a new hobby - board police is not for you.
My dog gave birth to five happy, healthy, and strong Chihuahua puppies today.
Fascinating, because I fostered four Belgian Tervuren puppies for the past 15 weeks! We can be puppy moms together! Guess where I found them? In a gassing shelter in North Carolina- 5 minutes from being dumped in a gas chamber with other dogs and cats, gasping for breath and writhing in pain until they suffocate.
But they're now happy and healthy (including the one in my siggy). WOW do they poop and pee- a lot! Housebreaking them was such hard work- and just vetting alone has exceeded $1600. But you have $2,000+ in extra cash, right? And for the five homes you have lined up, you've had an attorney draft a legally binding contract that prevents the adoptive homes from ever giving, selling, or abandoning the puppies to anyone but you, right? To make sure they don't end up like my foster puppies, in a cold, awful, scary gassing shelter. And you're prepared to always accept the FIVE puppies back into your home over the next 15-20 years if their families ever don't want them or can't have them anymore (because they're moving, are having babies, or the puppies have health problems that are too expensive for them to treat).

Thank you Leenie! I hate to sound rude because I don't mean to be, I just wish that everyone understood why backyard breeding is so bad. Everyone does stupid things before they learn, I have 2 cats from backyard breeders, one of whom I wanted to breed, before I knew better. But someone taught me somewhere down the line, and I learned my lesson, and became passionate about the cause, and now save lots of lives every year through the rescue, so I see every day where these dogs come from.
I hear these stories over and over....about how they love their dogs, will put them in good homes, etc. But that's not reality. The reality is that MOST of the dogs that are put to sleep in shelters are purebreds, who were bred by breeders with good intentions, or whose parents were, but somewhere along the line something got mixed up. And when you hold a puppy's paw and feed him peanut butter as he wags his tail in delight while he's being put to sleep....because even though he is purebred, there just aren't enough homes and too many dogs...it makes you realize what an effect backyard breeding has.
My main goal is education---everyone makes mistakes, as long as you learn from them I'm happy with that!
Congratulations...don't let others ruin this moment for you. Page me if you need help finding homes, my aunt loves chi's.
Since she singlehandedly ruined the lives of five other rescue dogs that could have been adopted, I think it's only fair that we inject a dose of reality into her "moment."

Great post, thank you!
We found our chow when she was 6 mos old in a shelter. Yes we know their "reputation," but she has turned out to be the SWEETEST dog ever. Everyone who knows her agrees with us (including our doggie daycare owners, and she's gone to 3 different daycares due to our moving across country). I don't know her history, but backyard breeding seriously does create a whole host of issues. Education of people who are tempted to do it and to get potential buyers to stop using that route as an option is all we can do.
I think you need to relax a bit. I think she was just trying to celebrate the miracle of birth, since thats where we are all heading. I understand your view point and my dog is neutered. However, both of our dogs had to be born somehow so you can't neuter them all.
Honestly, I don't come on this board to read ranting about none related topics. So maybe you can keep your opinions to yourself if its unnecessary to share. In the post where you said she killed 5 dogs....come on, give it a break. This is supposed to be a good place to come and share...you are ruining the spirit and intent of this site.

I realize I'm jumping in on this late, and honestly I didnt read the entire string so someone else may have said this, but its something that I think bears repeating anyway...
There is a shelter 5 miles from my house, I love animals...i like them more than most people, that damn Humane Society/Sara McLaughlin commercial makes me bawl my eyes out, and I totally believe that abuse and neglect and kill shelters suck...HOWEVER, I drove 5 hours from my house to pickout, and again to pick up a specific dog from a specific breeder and I would do it again. I actually begged the woman, upon hearing that she was no longer going ot breed dogs, to continue so that when this dog dies in 12 years I can get another one from her because every dog I have owned in my life has been bred by her family, and we've had quite a few dogs.
We hear what youre saying, and abandoned animals are a very sad thing. That doesnt mean that everyone in the world wants to go pick up random mut. Alot of people want something specific. If she can find good homes for them-good for her. My suggestion to help STOP them from ending up in shelters is do what my breeder did-make them sign a contract that if they decide they dont want it anymore they bring it back to you.
Seriously, animals die. Its how it works. Turn them all loose from the shelters and it would be far worse for them. The tragedy doesnt mean people should never ever again breed any animals! Shit, I'm less concerned about the animal shelter population than I am about some of the humans breeding.

Shit, I'm less concerned about the animal shelter population than I am about some of the humans breeding.
lol, i have epilepsy. should my tubes have been tied??
I disagree that she ruined adoption for 5 other dogs. I take it you're a vegan also??
