DS is 3 months old. He started daycare last week. I am nursing in the morning, evenings and on weekends and am pumping while at work so he is getting bottles. DS is eating anywhere between 6-7 ozs per feeding while at daycare. He used to make it 4 hours between feedings and now may only make it 3 hours sometimes. I know he is definitely in a growth spurt but just curious if this amount is normal? He does have reflux and has always spit up a lot (even nursing) so I know all 7 oz isn't staying down.
Also, I am curious about how to increase my output as he grows. I nurse DS in the morning before he goes to daycare and pump for 10 minutes (that normally gets me anywhere from 5-8 oz depending on how much he eats. I then pump 2 x at work (every 4 hours) for 10 minutes and get between 5 and 6 1/2 oz. He nurses in the evening and is in bed between 7:30 and 8:30. I think I need to pump again before I go to bed. I only have about 24 oz of a freezer stash and he is eating all that I pump during the day. I haven't had to supplement yet but am concerned I am going to start having to. I am drinking Mother's Milk Tea at least 3 x per day. What else should I do besides adding a night pumping session? Should I pump for longer than 10 minutes? I am usually dry by then.
Re: 3 mos - how much pumped BM and ???s
That seems like a lot of BM at that age for one feeding. My DS is 10 wks 2 days and only takes 3 or 4 oz per bottle. 4 is when he is super hungry. I plan on only sending 4oz bottles to daycare and expect them to feed him every 2 or 3 hrs.
Perhaps your LO would throw up less if he was fed smaller amounts, more often? It may be easier for him to digest. Just a thought.
I just went through this same issue with my daycare provider. I was worried because they were feeding LO more than I was pumping. So as a comparison, I had DH take a Friday off and stay with LO and see how much he ate. DS ate about 4 oz less than daycare had been giving him during the same 8 hour time span. That really spurred me to talke to DC and make sure they don't just give him a bottle as a soothing technique, and things have gotten much better.
Also - milk intake in BF babies doesn't increase drastically as they get older. There is a great article on Kellymom about this, and it also includes a calculator to see how much milk a BF baby needs from a bottle. Definitely check it out - I printed it out for my DC center to help them understand the difference between BF babies and FF babies as far as intake goes.
I just went to Kellymom and did the calculator since DS eats 5 times/day (he sleeps 10 hours at night) it said he should be eating around 5 oz per day but the low was 3.8 and the high was 6.
Maybe consider getting him up for a dream feed before you go to bed to try to get an extra feeding in there? It's great that he's sleeping for 10 hours (I'm jealous!) but it may mean he's eating more during the day than he would otherwise would to make up for it.
A couple things on the pumping - I'd pump more frequently than every four hours, especially if he's eating more frequently than that. I pump every two hours at work in order to keep up with my LO, even though he only eats every 2.5 - 3 hours. The extra pumping session in the evening is great. You can pump for longer than 10 minutes, even if you are not getting anything. That extra pumping with tell your body to start making more milk. The other thing I do is when I'm with LO on the weekends I let him nurse as frequently as possible. This helps bring my supply back up after a work week.
