Looking for a new wrap

I think I am done with the Moby, at least for now.  I am petite and feel like there is just way too much fabric.  I went on a nice long walk the other day and got super hot.  I have the Bjorn but frankly, it hurts my back so I have been looking at the Boba and the K'Tan.  I would prefer a carrier that I can do a hip carry with.  (I am too chicken to attempt a back carry :-/).  We are going on vacation next month, although we haven't decided where yet, and I would like a carrier that is easy to use yet versatile.

There are so many choices I need a little help to figure out which is the best one for my needs.  Thanks so much!

Re: Looking for a new wrap

  • You definitely don't want the k'tan ;-)  It's basically just a moby that doesn't require wrapping - can't be used for back carries (despite what they claim it's too stretchy to be safe) and won't give more support.  And the fabric is about the same so no cooler than the moby.

The boba might be a better option for you - but buckle carriers usually aren't that comfy in a hip carry.  It's honestly pretty easy to learn to back carry with an older baby in a buckle carrier - much easier than it looks!  And it's much cooler and easier on your back.

My siggy link has info on other carriers too that might help you out ;-)

  • Thank you!  I checked out your siggy link.  I guess I am just being indecisive.  There are just so many different kinds.

What is your favorite kind of carrier to use?

I'll answer for her, since I know the answer.. Woven wraps. They're similar to the Moby in that you have a lot of fabric, but they are woven rather than stretchy, and can be used for back, hip and front carries. They're really versatile. You have to purchase them online though, as they're not available in most local retailers.

  • I got two wovens on the advice of the people on this board and I honestly cannot for the life of me, despite attending a babywearing class, getting spotters, watching umpteen videos on the subject, getting advice from the folks on this board and trying dozens of time, figure out how to do a back carry in a woven. It's the "tuck under the bum" part that freaks me out. I can't figure out how it's secure, and that despite the fact that I carry her in a ring sling all the time that's "tuck under the bum." There just doesn't seem to be enough material.

I recommend a mei tai. It's SO EASY to do a back carry in a mei tai, and secure, too. Front ties are a snap, it's super comfortable, and much more versatile, easy to pack, and easy to get a custom fit than with my buckle carrier (I have a Boba -- which is really only good for 10 month and older babies) and an Ergo. I wish now I'd gotten a Beco butterfly instead of an ergo. The inner straps make back carries a snap!

Don't get a Boba until your child is older. It's really only for older babies and toddlers.

  • Thanks for all the great advice.  I think I may go with a Mei Tai. I wish I could try them all to see what I like best. Oh well...
  • Allie30 what Mei tai do you have currently?  I am looking for recs for one for a bigger baby.

    Thanks!

Certain wraps are wider than others and leave more material for under the bum tucks.  Also, what kind of carries are you doing?  Plenty of carries (all the ones I use) don't rely solely on the under the bum tuck and have a layer or two on top of that to really secure LO.

Unlike Allie30, I don't care for mei tais.  If I want something to wrap, I am happy with wraps.  If I want quick/easy, I love buckle carriers- I have an Ergo and a Kinderpack.  Right now I favor the Ergo because of its low back that allows LO to be arms out if he wants.  Also, unlike Allie30 here again- I like the Ergo better than the Beco.  I have never had a problem securing DS1 or DS2 on my back in the Ergo and the extra straps on the Beco are a nuisance to me (I am reaching for the buckle carrier for quick/easy ups & downs).   If I really want to tie LO on, I use a wrap =)

So yeah, everyone has different points of view and the best way to go is personal trial and error.  GL!
