DD is sooooo sick :-( What can I give her?

DD never gets sick, so I have no idea how to treat her. I'm pretty sure it's just a really bad cold or maybe a flu - hopefully not a bacterial infection.

She's super congested and snotty, has a wet mucousy cough, a low-grade fever, and hasn't eaten in 2 days - and is just out of it. I've given her Tylenol for the fever, but is there anything else I can give her for her other symptoms? I've given her warm baths/showers to try to clear her up, raised her mattress, put in a humidifier.... But none of it makes a difference. Any other tips??? Help my poor baby!

  • My ds has had a cold like this a few times and all our GP says that we can do is wait it out and if it lasts longer than a couple weeks then to come back in.

Ds has been sick for over a week now with almost the same symptoms as your dd, but it's gotten better. I rub baby Vicks on his chest and I have a menthol plug-in that plugs in to the wall that I use when he sleeps.  I have also been giving him a bit of Tylenol.  Other than that, just keep him hydrated and get him to eat anything I can.

  • I would use Saline and a nasal bulb to help keep the congestion/mucous flowing out.  Also, if she has a cough, I would guess her throat may be sore - so maybe some popsicles or warm water w/ honey?  Both may also be a bit of treat and will help keep her interested and also hydrated.

Other than that - lots of snuggles!!!!

  • My DS has had a cold like this a couple times and it's always miserable!  The pedi said there's really nothing you can do other than wait it out.  Keep doing what you're doing and make sure you're offering fluids constantly.  Have you tried saline solution for her nose?  That helps a lot with temporarily clearing the nose up.  Hope she feels better soon.

  • I actually took DD to the pediatrician today. I thought she had an ear infection...she was pulling at her ears, her cheeks are red and she didn't sleep last night. Come to find out it is a cold AND she is getting her molars!!! The pediatrician recommended benadryl to dry her up!! I didnt think we could do benadryl...but the doc said it was fine! i pray for a good night sleep tonight!!

  • Our DS has had the same thing for the last week. It started with me getting from someone at his last pedi appt early March, I ended up sick with a sinus infection and was on antibiotics all last week. Then DH and DS got it. We took him to his pedi last Tuesday and he said it is just a bad cold and cough, that there isn't much you can give them at this age just wait it out...usually 10-14 days. We have been at this with DS for 8 days now!

He has congestion, lots of runny nose, coughing so bad sometimes he spits up his formula and it wakes him at night. We have been giving Tylenol at times and adding in an all natural cough syrup our pedi recommended by Little Tikes made with honey as the ingredient. We have also been wiping his nose at all times and rubbing his back when he has a coughing spell. He will not take liquids, other than his formula. His eating has also taken a back seat. He normally would eat 4 tubs of purees a day and 4 formula bottles. Today he ate half of a yogurt and a few ounces of 2 bottles. I bought some Gerber banana yogurt with fruit juice drink that we are going to try later today to see if we can get some liquids in him. I figure since it's white and looks like his formula maybe at least he will try a taste.

I am sorry you are going through this too, it's so hard to see them miserable. It has been a very long 2 weeks at our house and we aren't over it yet.  Give me strength!

  • I just wanted to say I hope she feels better!! We go through this so often it's sickening! (literally!). The saline is usually a key player in getting my LO to nurse decently.
