Steam Cleaning Carpets

I planned on steam cleaning the nursery this weekend before our furniture comes in next week and mentioned it to my MIL... she was so adamant that I shouldn't be steam cleaning while pregnant in her message to me.  I called her back to see if it's because of fumes or if she just doesn't want me to strain myself (she's very cautious about everything, especially when you throw a pregnant lady in the mix!).  A quick google search didn't really show any reason not to steam clean so do you guys know if it's OK to use an in-home steam cleaner while pregnant?

I'm 99% sure she's just being overprotective but on the off chance that there are fumes I don't know about then I want to be prepared for her to come over some time this weekend with her cleaner in tow!

TIA!

  • I don't see what could be that awful about it.

  • I would say it is fine, just open a window for air circulation.

  • Can you get someone else to do it for you?  I'm planning to get it done professionally before the baby comes - always looks a lot better than when I use my home steam cleaner anyway.  Thanks for the reminder with this post because I'd almost forgotten that this is on my mental to-do list (another reminder why I really need to take the time to write down my to-do list so I don't forget what's on it due to pregnancy brain).
  • i have my own steam cleaner and i steam cleaned almost once a month...

she probably just doesn't want you to overdo it

just take lots of breaks if you need to. if i don't, i get real sore...

  • What kind of a steamer do you have? Ours is a Hoover and its great...no fumes whatsoever. We use a pet odor formula that actually smells really good. I don't lift the machine up the stairs anymore but I have no problem pushing it. I think your MIL is just looking out for you. I would use the steamer and just tell her your hubby did it Big Smile

I could, but I'd really rather just borrow my moms cleaner and do it myself because I want to have it all done this weekend so the room is ready to move furniture in next week when it comes in.

It's a tiny room too (9x10) so I'll just open the window (it's going to be gorgeous this weekend) and it won't take much time!.

  • We do ours once a month just to keep the carpets fresh and to get a better clean on the pergo floors.  It helps get rid of the "we have dogs" smell.  We have had a couple different cleaners and the one we like best is the Bissel ProHeat because the floors dry faster and the machine isn't too heavy.  Also, we use Mr. Clean Multipurpose cleaner because it has good smell choices and it's cheap but effective.

  • I frequently steam clean our carpets and was planning on doing our bedroom (baby's room looks fine and is rarely used right now).  My cleaner has no fumes really as it uses so little soap. I'd be careful to not hurt your back, though. This is my only concern for me as it sometimes bothers my back outside of pg.

We have a steam cleaner and I have never noticed "fumes".  I think we used the oxy clean version of carpet shampoo.  Those things can get kind of heavy when they are full though.  Thats the only thing that I can think of....avoid lifting it as much as you can.

  • I steam cleaned mine the other week!

I was going to rent one but then I did some research and found out that there was a highly rated Hoover steam-vac and it was on sale at Best Buy for only $130!  It is literally the best thing I have ever purchased.  But I also have a very stubborn puppy I am training so I get a lot of use out of it!

I agree with this.  I have a Hoover and can use it just fine, but wouldn't carry it up stairs or anything like that.  The pet formula works great for me too.

I have no idea what kind it is!!  My mom is bringing it by tonight and showing me how to use it.  I was talking to my mom about how MIL was adamant that I not do it and my mom agrees that she's just being over protective.  My mom was saying if I start to feel it or anything to just wait until DH is back in town to finish up but I shouldn't have any problems!

  • as long as your steam cleaner isnt too hard to push it's fine.

I use Vinegar and Fabuloso in ours so no crazy fumes.

  • it's really no different than vacuuming... you just have to do it a little slower...

  • Which Fabuloso product do you use?  Thanks so much...
  • What type of Fabuloso do you use in your steam cleaner?
