When did you start feeding?

When did you start feeding your baby fruits and veggies? What did you start with first? How often did you feed in the beginning? Brady is eating cereal at night before bed but that's it. I was thinking I might start mixing fruit or veggies into cereal and start feeing him during the day as well? What are your thoughts?

Re: When did you start feeding?

  • We started giving Nicholas veggie purees at 5 months and that is what we started with (we never really did the whole rice cereal stage). We introduced fruits after we introduced the main veggies (green beans, peas, squash, sweet potato). In my opinion I would wait on starting solids for as long as possible. With Nicholas I was so excited to start him on baby food but now in retrospect I wish I would have held off a little longer b/c while he was ready to eat them he didnt really need them for nutrition and once you start solids it just adds in a whole extra step and lots more work. Some may not agree but with the next baby we have I am going to wait a little longer and enjoy the convenience of just having bottles/nursing.

  • Our pedi recommended not starting even cereal until 6 months so thats what we did. Started with cereal for a week or so and then started to introduce a new veg or fruit every 4 days. We started with avocado, then green beans, sweet potatoes... By 7.5 months he was eating veg/fruit 2x a day.. By 9 months he was up to 3x a day.

  • I started Sophia with veggies around five months. But I agree: (" I was so excited to start him on baby food but now in retrospect I wish I would have held off a little longer b/c while he was ready to eat them he didn't really need them for nutrition and once you start solids it just adds in a whole extra step and lots more work.") You know after having been through all the making food (Sophia never got jarred food) and freezing it (Baby Beaba, love it!) I think I will definitely wait until 6 or 8 months next time.
  • I was adamant on waiting until he was six months. Not really sure why I was but I plan to wait that long again. The first solid food I did was banana.

  • We started cereal at 6 months.  After about a week we intro'd a veggie.  We did a few veggies first and then moved to fruits.  Once we got pretty established I started mixing fruit puree into his cereal at "breakfast".
