Would you ask in interview

I'm very interested in being able to work from home or having a job with flex hours (neither of which my current job allow).  I've been thinking about interviewing down the road, but don't know if it's a good idea or not to ask about these things during an interview.

Re: Would you ask in interview

  • I think its perfectly reasonable to ask in an interview whether they offer flexible work arrangements.  State it as a general question about what its like to work for that company.

  • I asked when I interviewed for this job.  I mostly just asked about being able to leave at a reasonable time when we weren't busy and being able to pick up my kids most days.  I didn't want to end up in a place where they expected me to work until 7 pm every night because I would be miserable.  I did make it clear that it would not impact my ability to complete my work and that I would work hours as necessary to ensure my work got done.

Agreed.  Especially since you have a job currently it would be better to know going in to a new situation what it will be like rather than jump ship and end up worse off than before.

  • I would not.  I would leave this to the negotiations after an offer and try to find out through other channels about the culture there.

  • They are likely to tell you as a selling point if they do.  I work for Citigroup, and they told me in my interview (about a year ago) about their flexible work schedules; they are also well-known for it, and listed on various "flexible schedule" and "good for moms" company lists.
