Newbie ? -- cleaning pump parts after each use?

Hey -- curious what people tend to do.  Do you clean (with soap and water) the horns, bottles, various pump parts after every time you pump during the day?  Or, do you pump using the same parts for the entire day and then wash at night and prepare for the next day?

When I was in the hospital the nurse said I didn't have to wash them if I had used them during that day.  But, now that I'm home and I go to reuse the parts without washing them first, I'm second guessing myself.

Thanks!

  • I don't - I put the pump parts in the fridge and wash at the end of the day.

  • No. At work I toss my horns into my cooler bag and do not clean between uses. When I'm on the road I wipe them down with quick clean wipes between uses.
  • I put them in the fridge between uses and wash every night. I would go crazy if I had to wash everything 3 times a day.

  • I did. soap and water every time. it was a pain in the ACE. maybe next time I won't. I never even thought about not doing it, to be honest.
  • I wash the pieces that touch my breast after every use, but the tube etc only once a day and I toss everything used for feeing/breastfeeding in the dishwasher once a week for santitization.

  • I have 2 sets of parts (I pump 2x a day at work) so I use them and then put them in a ziploc bag and then wash with soap and water when I get home.

  • I take apart and rinse the parts with warm water after each use.  At night I thoroughly wash everything.

  • Thanks for the responses!
  • I wash them after each use and then use the medela quick steam bags too. Its such a PIA I am dreading going back to work and doing this 3x a day.... for those who dont wash after each use what do you do about the dried milk on the parts after pumping? I thought you had to wash them or they could become a bacteria issue in the milk for the next time you pump? I have the medela freestyle, not sure if it matters on the amount of pump pieces touching milk.
