BJ City Mini vs. City Select?

Any thoughts?

I thought I would get the City Select, but since the City Mini is on sale...well, I love a sale...

Anyone have the City Mini double?  Your thoughts??

TIA!!

Re: BJ City Mini vs. City Select?

  • We got the City Select because I didnt want a side-by-side.  I have a difficult enough time shopping and getting through doorways with a single, a double wide would be impossible.  I also liked that I could use the city select as a single or double.  We used it for a few months before DD was born and I can also easily adjust if I am out with just one kid rather than switching strollers.  Oh and I remember looking at the double city mini and there is a bar across the bottom that limits access to the basket which was a huge concern of mine.  I have a stroller with poor access to the basket and it drives me nuts but I primarily use my strollers for shopping and walks.

  • I think we're going with the City Mini double, since I'm in love with my City Mini single and I can't stomach the price tag of the Select, but I'm running into the problem of where to test drive it. Any ideas? I checked BRU and it doesn't look like they have it at my local store, and neither does Buy Buy Baby. I hate spending $300 on something I can't see first...

  • We have our city Mini for about 1.5 weeks and I LOVE it.  Yeah, there things that I don't really like - but the pros totally outway the cons.

Yeah, the basket are basically pointless.  They are completely under the seat.  But, I ripped the basket off of my single [not a city mini] (no kidding) so this was not really a big deal to me.

I got a "mommy clip" to hold my purse and any bags, and then my diaper bag has an adjustable strap - so I just extend it and hang it over the handle.

I had a front to back, and it was HARD to get through doors.  It was the length that was the problem NOT the width.  It was hard to hold the door open, and then push with one hand.

most people don't realize that a double is only about 6-7 inches wider than a single.  the city mini will fit through any STANDARD door way.  Remember the city mini (and most other SBS) are not any wider than a wheelchair.

The city mini can be pushed and steer with only one hand.  Which for me is key, since I am usually either trying to hold Lil J's hand....or pushing a shopping cart with the other hand.

It goes around corner like a breeze, so much easier than the Front to Back.

We bought a used one, and I love love love it.

I have never tried the City Select

We have the City Mini and LOVE it :)

Yes, the basket is not that great, but you can still stuff a purse, some coats, etc. in it. Also, behind each seat there are mesh pockets, so I use those a lot to hold stuff.

Like MyColony said......super easy to get through doors, steers amazingly well and is easy to fold.

I never tried the City Select because I didn't a front-to-back one.....I wanted a side-by-side. I have never once had an issue getting it through a door and it turns so easily that you can push it around even the smallest of stores.

You are NoVa, right? In Gaithersburg, MD there is a huge baby store called Great Beginnings and they have a ton of gear. I would call and see if they have it and then take a drive. It is an awesome place, I loved it!

I'm not sure what you will be using this stroller for, but here's my 2 cents. I have the Select and a City Mini double. I use the CMD for outdoor stuff and the Select for indoors. Since you will have 2 kids, I don't recommend getting a city mini single, if that's what you were originally deciding between. If I could only have 1 stroller, it would be the Select. While the CMD does fit through most doorways, I can't use it in a mall b/c the aisles and racks are too close together. The Select has a much smaller footprint than most tandem doubles. The CMD pushes awesome and is ridiculously easy to fold. It's also lightweight compared to other SBSs with the same quality push. It's not an all-terrain stroller, but it's easy to push on uneven sidewalks. The Select is also easy to push, but not as easy as the CMD, just b/c it's a tandem. The handle on the Select can be higher than the CMD so IMO it's more comfortable to push, even though it's less easy, if that makes sense. You can actually use the Select's basket too. The CMD's is pointless. But the best feature is that the Select can be a single. That's so handy.
  • I was originally sold on the City Select, but after a TON of research I went with the Mini Double and I'm so happy I did!

In a nutshell, I decided a tandem was just not suited to our needs. We use our stroller mostly for neighborhood walks and big trips like the zoo, trips to museums, outdoor shopping, etc. A SBS was just a natural choice for us. Tandems just seem soooo long and unwieldy to me..I don't like the way weight is distributed with a tandem. Like MyColony said, a typical SBS is only a few inches wider than a single and should fit through any doorway.  Or Mini is so incredibly easy to steer (I can steer it with one hand)....we took it for a spin around the zoo on Saturday and I didn't have any issues whatsoever fitting it anywhere I wanted to go.

A couple of other considerations--the Mini Double weighs 22 lbs whereas the City Select with second seat weighs 36 lbs., and I could be mistaken about this but I think you have to remoev the second seat in order to fold the Select (which doesn't seem like a big deal, but you have to do this with my Bugaboo and I definitely wanted a double that was quicker/easier to fold).

The basket on the Mini is indeed a little difficult to access, but I just push things in through the side rather than the back and it works fine.

Hmm...that's all I can think of right now. If you decide to go with the Mini, the stone/black color is really nice in person!

Oooh, I'll have to look into that, thanks! One of my moms club friends actually saw my FB post about it and volunteered to let me test drive hers, too...I don't see her very often, but it'd be great if that works out!
