it just helps things along if you are ready otherwise my understanding is that it is like a primer...it softens the cervix but won't do anything without the oxytocin release and contractions
The semen contains the same hormone that is contained in the gel used to soften and prime the cervix for labour. So sex will only work if the cervix is ready to go.

Also keep in mind that if you have PTL, an irritable ute, short cervix, or various other complications, the doctor will first put you on pelvic rest to prevent further irritation and progress. I was on pelvic rest for 6 weeks, but only on bed rest for one.
