Something I don't understand about sex to bring on labor

If this is true, then why is it ok (for most people) to have sex throughout their pregnancies?  Wouldn't it put women at risk for ptl?

I am sure I'm missing something, but I've had this question for a while now.

  • I believe it only really works if your body is really ready for it. Also the sperm is supposed to soften the cervix and get things started.
Baby, you've got the sort of eyes that tell me tales...

I thought the same thing...but I think what PP is true...it will only work (like all other remedies) if your body is ready

  • I hope it's true for the softening part at least. We've been doing it constantly so I'm hoping when I go to my appt tomorrow I'll have made some progress! lol

  • it just helps things along if you are ready otherwise my understanding is that it is like a primer...it softens the cervix but won't do anything without the oxytocin release and contractions

  • The semen contains the same hormone that is contained in the gel used to soften and prime the cervix for labour. So sex will only work if the cervix is ready to go.

  • Also keep in mind that if you have PTL, an irritable ute, short cervix, or various other complications, the doctor will first put you on pelvic rest to prevent further irritation and progress. I was on pelvic rest for 6 weeks, but only on bed rest for one.
  • My hubby and I have been having sex for the last couple of days....and still no baby
