How can this be??

So I ha've been having contraction for 2 days now and today I thought I had a trickle of water so I went in to get checked. My water did not break but I am having very real, painful, frequent contractions.  I am still not dilated. And I wasn't dilated last week either. Before I left I was told by the doc that at the rate my contractions are coming on they wouldn't be surprised if they saw me and a day or two to deliver. How can this be? I've been contracting for 2 days and I'm still not dilated. Can someone please tell me if I'm missing something. These are much more painful than they were with my first baby .

  • I'm glad you're full term! Some women are in full blown labor before they progress with dilation. Unfortunately, some women never dilate- resulting in a c-section.

I was induced and contracted for 12 hours and didn't even dilate a centimeter. You could be the opposite and go from 0-10 in a flash.

    Good luck!

  • I was the same as MayoWife.  Contractions from pitocin during my induction and I only dilated to 4cm (resulting in c/s).  How did your DD's birth go?

I hope something starts happening for you.  That must be uncomfortable!

  • I had my 40 week checkup on Wednesday Sept 3rd (of 08). Nothing, not dilated or anything. Thursday morning my water was trickling a little and I was only at a one. After pitocin and being in the hospital all day and night they started talking c-section and i was finally ready to push at 10am friday morning. She didn't make her appearance until noon. It was long and painful. I really don't want to have contractions (especially painful ones) for the next few days or weeks. I feel like maybe I will never dilate. I am seeing a different doctor tomorrow since my doctor was already booked solid but I am still going to see what my options are. I am scared of being induced for the same thing you said. I don't want to be in labor and then have a c-section. I would rather opt for the c-section right away. Oh and with my daughter i ripped open everywhere and it took forever to stitch me up.
  • Easier said than done, but try to relax tonight! Hopefully you'll get some solid direction from the doctor tomorrow.
  • My sister had contractions for 5 days that would come for several hours, and then stop.  She was sent home from the hospital once or twice.  When they finally did come and not stop, her labor was very fast.  Overall, she said it was a good way to go, because she got good breaks, BUT that it was mentally anguishing "am I, am I not".  Anyhow, GL.
