Toddlers: 24 Months+

If your LO wore a cranial band/helmet...

Please ease my mind and tell me everything will be ok!  DS2 (4.5 months) will likely need a helmet to correct a flat spot.  I know it's only cosmetic but being a mom I can't help but worry. The more I google the more I run into information saying that babies with plagio are at risk for learning disbiities, etc.

  • DS 1 wore a helmet for 11 weeks.  He is a smart handsome little boy!  Getting him fitted was the hardest, but we realized quickly after he didn't even notice it was on!  It went by quick!  His head looks great now!  He had a really severe case so sometimes when he is bathing you can tell a little bit, but no one but us would even think anything!

  • Everything will be ok! DS wore a helmet for 6 weeks starting around 4 months. He has such a round little head now! I think helmets are fairly common these days - I know quite a few people whose kids have worn them.

Yes, the fitting is hard and putting them in the helmet the first time is HARD. I did cry but I knew we were doing the right thing. He will never remember wearing the helmet and it did so much good for him. We rigorously followed the instructions for wearing the helmet 23.5 hours a day (even during sleep) and I think that helped the correction work so quickly. That and starting at a young age (like your DS) seems to help.

I had TONS of people come up to me when we were out and say their child had worn a helmet, yes it's hard, but totally worth it in the end. It made me feel so much better!

Lastly, I haven't heard anything about plagio and learning disabilities...my son has always progressed normally and hit the milestones right on time wearing the helmet. You could ask your doctor or the orthodic specialist tho if you are worried.

Let me know if you have more questions!

  • DD wore a band...actually, she had two.  We started her off at around 5 months and she was completely done with both of them after her first birthday.  Her head is perfect to everyone else - I can see where it's still a tiny bit misshapen.

What I understand is that if the plagio is left untreated, the child will most likely have learning disabilities.  Plagio is not just cosmetic.  DD hit almost all of her milestones early or on time - she was a late talker, which was more likely due to her being an early walker/runner/climber.
