So - it turns out that Will does have a milk protein intolerance. After 5 days on Alimentum, he's gone from crying nonstop to laughing and giggling like his normal happy self. Both Dr. Tran at NW Asthma and Allergy (thanks girls!) and his pediatrician agree that's the biggest sign that we should not be giving him any dairy until we retest at a year.
Turns out he's also allergic to peanuts - so no nuts whatsoever and they're prescribing an epi pen
No wonder he's been so unhappy - I eat peanut butter like it's going out of style! We're going to retest for that at a year too.
We ended up having to do blood tests (which are a little less accurate than the skin tests) because his skin was already so blotchy. We used the lab in the building and that is the LAST time I ever take my children for labwork if it's not at the Children's lab or Mary Bridge lab. The lady missed his vein and was digging that damn needle around in his arm while he screamed. I seriously about knocked the holy living sh*t out of her at the same minute she hit the vein and the vial started filling. His arm was black and blue. I am blessed with such healthy children, I have no idea how people with seriously ill children deal with it. I will never forget that until the day I die.
So - since we're not on solids yet and I've got a while to figure out how to introduce things to him without dairy and peanuts.
Re: Update on Will
I'm so glad you have some answers and happy baby! We really liked Dr. Tran, so I hope she got you all the info you need! Too bad he couldn't do the skin testing, the nurse we had was SO awesome with Lulu. Poor little man, hope his bruise heals up quickly.
Ah H, first of all ((BIG HUGS)). You are such a trooper, and such a great mama! I am so glad you finally know what is going on with little mister, and that you have your happy little man back. I am so sorry that he is allergic to milk and peanuts though. Those are rough allergies. I hope that he can overcome these allergies in time!
Thanks for the update. I have been thinking about you guys a lot these past few days!

Yay on some answers. DD was on Alimentum for some time. It is so friggin expensive. I found the best price was through Amazon and if you have prime, 2 day shipping. Some insurance companies will cover it if they have a provision for formula under allergy care.
At some point, Alimentum, which still has some milk proteins but just extremely broken down, stopped working. So we switched to Neocate. We took DD off Neocate for other issues not related to the milk protein. So if you ever get in a jam and the Alimentum stops working just contact me because I have a can of the Neocate which is the next step up. You cannot find Neocate in stores and most pharmacies do not stock it. I have no idea why I am saving it, I just am. It's unopened.
Thanks L
You're saving it for the same reason I'm saving the BM I have in the freezer until it passes it's expiration date. Just in case.
Our pediatrician is going to try and help us with the insurance company on the formula.
Hopefully he'll outgrow at least the milk part really, really soon. I hear that's pretty common.
For the peanut stuff....it would seem easy to avoid outside of the fact that we eat a lot of PB&Js around here, they're Madelyn's favorites. So, I'm trying to figure out what I'll give him in lieu of that, when he hits that point.
Poor Will :-( I'm glad he's happier now and that you were able to get some answers. I hope that when you test again, that everything clears up.
I'm sorry you had such a terrible experience in the lab! You should have hit her. Did you say anything to her?
Good luck with everything and I hope you're able to find easy solutions that work for you and Will!
I can so relate to this!! And I'm so glad you've finally gotten to the bottom of everything. I know it's great for your piece of mind. I'm sure AshleyKimberlyn can give a lot of good advice on feeding a child who can't have dairy :-)
Or Sunflower seed butter! I am allergic to nuts and I just recently found the sunflower seed butter at Trader Joes. It requires a little bit of mixing (same as natural peanut butter) but it is SOOO good! I have used it for sandwiches, cookies, bars, all kinds of things and my DH and DD love it! I have not tried PB w/ Cam yet in fear but she doesnt seem to mind the substitute! Good luck!
I'm glad you got some answers.
How careful do you ahve to be with the peanuts? My cousin's DD can't have peanut products in their home at all. And do you have to avoid other nuts? If not, try almond butter - my kids prefer that to peanut butter and so do I.
Hmm, I might pick up almond butter or seed butter just to try it
I don't exactly know just yet - they did prescribe him an epi pen....but he didn't have any sort of breathing issues with my BM - just lots of unhappiness and the terrible exzema. They are having me avoid other nuts right now, because he's so little and they said these allergies can get mixed up in their little systems.
We'll test again at a year - to see how it goes - and I won't be feeding him PB before then, for sure
I don't think I gave Madelyn peanut butter till after she was a year old.
