  Personally, for black tie, I'd like a longer dress, but I'm the one who wears ankle length skirts all the time, so maybe it's just me.  Otherwise I think that dress is great

  I like that dress.  I think that cocktail length is appropriate for black tie....or at least that's what I gather from watching all my real housewifes shows since I don't attend many black tie events LOL!

  i was just at a black tie gala this weekend and while i think that dress is super cute, i dont think its fancy enough. some of the women were super super dressy and in my opinion it is always better to be over-dressed than under-dressed. i wore a really pretty robert rodriguez dress from neimans - if i can find a link i'll post it later along with some other dresses i think might be appropriate (i would do this now but i have a little girl screaming from her crib!) good luck!

  There are tons to pick from and you don't have to worry about trying to find another reason to wear in it the future like when you buy one!  Plus, the chances are slim that someone else will be wearing the same gown

  K...those are all very cute.  I like the first one a lot, but it's only in those light colors...I think I'm leaning toward a darker color.

  you could totally pull that maggie london dress off. Just add smokey eyes or pretty makeup, black high heels, maybe a cute clutch and overstated jewelry. You'll likely be seated most of the time - no?

  One time I wore a bridesmaid dress (it worked out pretty well) to a black tie event - have anything like that hanging around?

  Yes, I'm pretty sure we'll be seated most of the time.  

  I do have a bridesmaid dress from a few years ago...it's a bit outdated and I'm positive it doesn't fit.

  I was going to suggest Rent the Runway as well.  I just rented two dresses for there for a couple of back to back events we have in mid-April so I can't give you the real scoop until I actually get the dresses in April.  It all sounds good though.  Lots of options, and the rentals start at $50 (or maybe even $40).  They send you two sizes so there's a good chance of at least one of them fitting, and you can rent a 2nd dress in the same price range for $25 which is great if you either have back to back events - or can't decide!

  We go to a black tie event every November for this group that DH is in.  Most of the women wear long, floor length dresses, but I've gone in cocktail dresses before.  If you have time, get your make up done for the event.  You can get it done at any department store cosmetics counter.  I like Chanel for black tie.  Call to make an appointment, and it's free, but you are expected to buy something.

  If you sign up for Rent the Runway you should ask Meritage for a referral since she's using them and likely to do so in the future.  I have no fancy events in my future so the referral bonus would sit for ages, I'd rather see her have some cash to put to use
