Eloise has been on our list since we found out we were pregnant, but Eleanor has really grown on me. We've talked about trading Eloise for Eleanor, but haven't made a firm decision (I still really love Eloise).
I like the nn possibilities for Eleanor better, and with Eloise I just always hear the "wheeze" part (plus a neighbor's daughter is Eloise and they called her Weezy as a nn).
I think Elinor/Eleanor is SKYROCKETING in popularity and I bet we'll see a huge jump in its use over the next few years. If that doesn't bother you, go for it - it's a fantastic name. But I chose Eloise just because I see a LOT of people using Eleanor/Elinor right now (and she'll be joined by a million other kids being called Ellie).

I'm hoping to avoid the nickname Ellie either way, since my name is Allie. I also wonder if the surge in Ellie's popularity might backlash; many of the girls who were named Eleanor/Eloise/Ellison/Ella/Elliot/Eliana/etc. might choose to go by their full names rather than be Ellie S. or Ellie W. It would be ironic, considering how many people were hell-bent on finding an Ellie-name for the purpose of calling their daughters Ellie.

If I named my DD Eleanor, I would call her Nora. I would avoid the whole Ellie fad altogether.
I chose "equal." Eloise has a very, very slight edge simply because I like the Eloise books. As for Eleanor, the only one I know IRL goes by Nori. I don't think an "Elle/Ellie" nn is a given.
My baby's name is Eleanor. I get asked WEEKLY if I'll be calling her Ellie. I find it baffling, given that my name is also Allie.
Why are people so obsessed with Ellie as a nickname? And what names are out there that are spawning all these Ellie nicknames?
Off the top of my head?
Elliot (for a girl)
Ellison (for a girl)
Ellery (for a girl)
Ellis
Eliana
Ella
Gabrielle/a
Estelle
Elise
Brielle
Elizabeth
Eleanor
Eloise
I know there's more...
Yes, but the only ones of those that are remotely popular are Ella, Gabrielle,a and elizabeth, and most of the latter two do NOT go by Ellie as a nickname. So I'm wondering what all these baby Ellies are actually named.
Eleanor can also be a huge number of nicknames, too. I don't suppose most moms of Gabrielles or Elizabeths are instantly asked if they plan to call their daughter's "Ellie." But that's the response I always get -- not "oh, what a pretty name" But "Are you going to call her Ellie?"

Eloise was number one on my girl list! But were are having a boy...so it's not getting used this time.
I love it. I have a cousin that named her girl Eleanor...and i like it, but not nearly as much.

There's also Leonor, like the Spanish infanta, (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Infanta_Leonor_of_Spain) and Lenore, like Edgar Allan Poe's poem.
