Pregnant after IF

Thin gals: When did you start to show?

I always figured (erroneously) that since I'm thin and have a small waist that I would show easily. Well, now I'm 17 weeks, and I'm getting worried that there's something wrong, and the baby isn't growing, because I look almost exactly the same as I did before I became pregnant :/ I guess I'm wondering if there are others out there in the same boat? I think I'm starting to develop a complex!

Re: Thin gals: When did you start to show?

  • You can look at my blog, I took pictures every week and it wasn't until 18 weeks that my belly started to get a little bigger, but it wasn't really noticable until 19/20 weeks.  My jeans still fit me at 20 weeks, able to button up no problem.

I wouldn't worry, everyone carries differently.

  • I think it more correlates with height. I have one friend who is super skinny, but also very tall, and she looks tiny the whole way through. I'm only 5'1" and I started noticing my belly rounding by 10 weeks in my first pregnancy and even then, I don't think I really popped until 18 weeks or so. There are plenty of people who never get big (think of that I didn't know I was pregnant show)! I'm sure everything's fine!

  • I started to show around 11 weeks to me and MH but to other people probably around 17 or so weeks.

Try not to worry!!  Everyone shows differently.  I think I started to show as early as I did because I have a short torso and there was nowhere else for my stomach to go.

  • Ditto about the blog - I have pics there too & also pics under "Worry Bud" (Former Buds page) on Bloomin Babies (both links in siggy). But I think I started showing @ least that i could see around 12 weeks,  but an actual bump, where you could tell I was pregnant & not just fat...I don't think I got until 20+ weeks.
  • I didn't start showing until about 20 weeks.  I was taking pictures each week and sometime between weeks 19 and 20, I totally popped...like, you'd think there were 2 months between the pics!  Don't worry, it's coming :)

  • Thanks everyone! I will try to remain patient!

  • I am thin but only 5'2" so I think the fact that I am short makes a bit of a diffrence.  I could tell I was forming a small bump around 12 weeks, but I didn't look noticably bigger until around 20 weeks.  Now at 30 weeks I am still fitting into some of my pre-pregnancy shirts.  I always thought i would be bigger, but I'm still pretty thin. I should also point out I didn't start gaining weight until after 12 weeks and it was a very slow gain until around 25 weeks. I have only gained 16lbs in total so far.

I was worried about the baby not growing and talked to my doctor about it at one of my appts.  She measures me every time I go in now and I am right on track.  I would ask your doctor about it if you are concerned.

  • Hey E-

I have a friend who just gave birth to a 7 lb baby girl...and she BARELY showed at all!!!  I saw her 2 weeks ago (she had the baby yesterday @39 wks) and I would have guessed she was MABYE 20 weeks.

She was thin to start with...and didn't even have a bump till 7 months, and had the smallest full term bump I've ever seen.

The mommy and baby are both perfectly healthy (excpet the mom is prob going to need to gain some weight post birth), and both of them are adorable!

Though it may not seem like it, my dr told me that the baby is growing and taking what it needs regardless of how big your tummy is and how much weight you've gained.

When I was pregnant with my boys (triplets) I didn't really start showing until around 18-19 weeks.  I was in Pottery Barn Kids, and some stranger said to me "are you sure everything is OK because you don't even look pregnant with one".  I went home and cried for like an hour.  Of course, once I started growing the belly got huge.

BTW - with this second pg I started showing much sooner (14 weeks).  It's like my body knew where to go this time around.

  • I would say it was about 19-20 weeks was when I really popped (although i am not good at remembering this kind of stuff). I am pretty sure I started wearing maternity pants around the same time, although I could still fit into most pants (with the rubber band trick) it was getting uncomfortable.

Before that I had some extra pudge there but it wasn't noticeable to anyone that didn't know I was pregnant.

I also have a really short torso which I think means you show sooner.

    I wouldn't worry!

  • Don't worry sweetie I'm sure your little one is doing just fine.  I think height and torso length can really impact when and how much you show.

A gal at my work is 6ft tall and rail thin and never even wore maternity clothes when she was pg with #1 and #2, she just had a lot of room inside for them.

Another friend of mine is tall and thin, but has a long torso.  She had full term twins and didn't look any bigger than someone carrying a singleton.  She also just had a lot of room for them.

If it makes you feel better I am short (with a short torso) and fat and just look fatter...LOL!

  • I am not sure if I am considered "thin", I was a size 8/10 pre-pregnancy, but didn't really carry any extra abdominal fat.

I started showing around 18 weeks.  I wouldn't worry at all, everyone carries differently.

  • I think you're tall like me, and I've heard that this gives the baby more room to grow up rather than out.  If everything is measuring fine on the inside, I wouldn't worry at all.  Enjoy your flat stomach while it lasts.  Wink

  • I'm usually a size 4, dropped to a size 2 (thanks to m/s), and started to show, where others could notice, around 16 weeks (with twins).  I'm at the point now, where it's noticeable to those that don't know me -- where someone made a comment at the supermarket.  Even still, I can wear almost all of my pre-pregnancy clothes.  (Some of the more tight fitting things, like my leggings, I have chosen not to wear because they dig in to my belly.)

I think it's completely normal...  As long as all looks good on the u/s with the baby's growth and whatnot, I wouldn't fret yet.  Enjoy it while you can!

  • I wouldn't worry...  I'll be 15 weeks tomorrow, with triplets and I've just started to sport a baby bump.  My B/F is 14 weeks pregnant and her doctor told her not to expect to start showing until 20 weeks.

That's so awful! Why do people who lack medical degrees think they are qualified to make any kind of statement like that? Do they really think they're smarter than your OB (and peri, with trips!)???

  • I've actually heard that smaller women show later. Maybe it takes longer to stretch the abdominal muscles?

Ditto for me on the short torso, except I "popped" around 16 weeks.  Now I can't get people to stop telling me how huge I look! ugh
