Pregnant after a Loss

Are there any safe sleep aids to take while PG?

I quit smoking while pregnant and BFing DS then started back up, quit when I got PG last time and picked it right back up the night we found out our baby was gone.

I quit again like 17 days ago and am finding this time to be the hardest for me for some reason.  I can not fall asleep and when I do I can not stay asleep.  I sweat and toss and turn all night long and it is driving me nuts!  TIA.

  • Tylenol PM is safe. Same sleepy ingredients as Benadryl. If I were you though, I'd talk to my OB before taking anything during the 1st Tri.

  • Yes, benedryl is safe. Unisom "Sleep Tabs" in particular have doxylamine succinate as their active ingredient which is completely safe for pregnant women and helps with morning sickness! A half is more than enough and if I take a whole one past about 8 at night I'm groggy the next day. Any way...make sure you talk to your doctor about what's best for you in your situation and gestation! I'm sure a quick call will take care of it. GL!

  • Thanks!!  I go tomorrow for another draw and will ask then, just wanted to see if there was something I could go buy and take tonight? If it is safer to ask then I will just wait.  Baby is more important.

  • meletonin is also safe.

    meletonin is also safe.

That is what my MIL suggested and I was not sure because I have never used it before.  But is it natural so I will ask about all of these tommorrow at my appointment.  I'm sure I will not forget because I have to go as soon as I open my eyes and I am know I will be exausted in there.

This is true.  I would just take Benadryl though if you don't have any aches and pains.  Tylenol PM has the same dose of Benadryl (25mg) as a tablet of regular Benadryl.

  • I wouldn't take Melatonin I did a quick search if it was safe and everything said

Pregnant or nursing women should not take melatonin because it could interfere with fertility.

its actually one of the reasons I didn't take it after our loss.  I would err on the side of caution and wait until you see your dr tomorrow.

  • I sometimes have bouts of insomnia in non-preg life.  Since the BFP I've steered clear of them though, not worth the risk in 1st Tri.  FWIW, I'm having issues sweating, tossing & turning, and constantly waking up too and I've never smoked in my life.  I think its pretty normal.  I'd talk to your doc and see what they say.

Yes but not normal for me.  I never sweat in my sleep and usually sleep pretty sound once I do go to bed.  It's definitely the quitting smoking again.  But Thanks Junebug!

  • Ambien IR (old Ambien) is a catergory B.  It is safe only causes sleep by binding to the specific receptor sites.  The others you get sleep as a side effect.  There is no rebound insominia after not taking Ambien
