Pregnant after IF

Do I need to fast before my 1 hr Glucose test?

My OB didn't tell me to, but I have mine at 10am tomorrow and some friends told me not to eat after midnight. What do you ladies think?

Re: Do I need to fast before my 1 hr Glucose test?

  • I didn't have to - I had no restrictions at all.  I just had a granola bar for breakfast that day and I passed.

  • Everyone I know who had that done had to fast. Is there an after hours number you can call? Like a triage nurse?

  • I only fasted for the 3 hr. I had eggs and a slice of toast before my 1hr test. GL! I wouldn't fast unless they tell you to.

  • My dr said I could eat a light breakfast like toast. Mine was at 8:45am so I didn't end up eating before. I would bring something with you because after I was starving and needed to eat right away. Good luck!
  • Mine was at 3pm and I just ate normally, but avoided any extra sugar like soda.

  • My OB told me to eat as I normally would.  Once I get to the office I cannot have anything else to eat or drink (except the liquid that they give you for the test).

I asked her about fasting because I had a 5 hour glucose tolerance test in the past (completely unreleated to any pregnancy).  My OB said I didn't, but that if I failed the 1 hour that I would be required to complete a 3 hour test where fasting would be necessary.

    Good luck!

  • I'm a phlebotomist and do these on a weekly basis. No you do not have to fast for a 1hr ( unless specified by Dr) But I would recomend a light breakfast. I've seen levels come back super high and then they realize it could have been the four bowls of cocoa puff they ate!! UMM yeah what you eat can raise you blood sugar along with the glucola. Good luck!

I didn't.  My OB told me to eat normally the day of the test.  I made sure to not load up on girl scout cookies or anything too sweet though.
