Trying to Get Pregnant

Another Cautionary Clomid Tale

Nowhere near as scary as the one that everyone always posts when people say they are going on Clomid unmonitored, but thought I'd share.

I did one month on Clomid (50mg) and went in for bloodwork, but wasn't monitored by ultrasound. The second month I did CD25 bloodwork and went in for an ultrasound when I ovulated. After my appointment my doctor determined that the Clomid had completely thinned my lining to the point I couldn't conceive or carry a pregnancy, so she gave me Provera, Crinone (Progesteron gel) and 100mg of Provera. She didn't want to monitor me and told me to come back in a month.

I had a bad feeling about all of this and made an appointment with an RE. I went in last week and my RE said that he would have never put me back on Clomid because of the thinning of my lining. Then he did an ultrasound and found a two-inch cyst on or near my right ovary that had been causing me tremendous pain. My OBGYN never mentioned anything about a cyst and was more than willing to put me on more Clomid without checking.

Anyway, just wanted to share my story and tell you to go with your gut. If you don't feel comfortable with your OBGYN, find a new one or go to an RE. I wish I had gone much sooner.

I wish more people would post their experiences like this. My friend has been TTGP for 6 cycles and has had slightly irregular periods. She decided she wanted to see a doctor to see what was going on (she was using FF, but was not very patient) so she called around until she found a random midwife to go see. She walked out that day (after a short conversation, no testing or anything) with her Clomid perscription in hand and instructions to come back when she was pregnant. Nothing else. It is scary.

  • thank you so much for sharing this!  it's pretty scary how doctors will prescribe just about anything these days.  i'm just so glad i'm learning all of this on here so that i know what to do if i ever do need these drugs.  i would never have known otherwise!
  • Wow, thanks for sharing your experience.  I wish everyone who thinks about taking Clomid  was aware of the dangers and paid as much attention to their instinct as you did.  Glad that you're okay, and I hope your RE has some better solutions in mind :)

  • I lucked out. When my OB/GYN gave me an Rx for Clomid and only monitored me by blood work. I was on it for 3 cycles. And I only did the blood work the first cycle. I'm with an RE now and he closely monitors me. I'm really lucky that nothing happened to me while I wasn't being monitored.

I don't believe most ob/gyns know what they are doing when it comes to infertility.
