Hi, my name is Jill. I have never posted here, but the boards have always helped me with so many other things, I thought I'd try here. My son is going to be 2 in a week. He does not talk consistently, he has said a handful of words but we only have heard them once or twice and then never again, no matter how hard we try to get him to repeat them. He also has also been diagnosed with some sensory processing disorder issues. He has been doing OT since the beginning of January and only been doing speech since the beginning of February. We have seen great improvements in him since doing both, so it has been successful. We were told by the therapist and our pedi that it would be a good idea to see a behavioral pediatrician, this was back in the fall, it took this long to get into one. We don't have many where I live and the ones we do have came highly unrecommended. Thankfully a specialist from another city started coming here once a month and that is who we saw. He told us our son is on the autism spectrum, very mild, but on the spectrum. I'm heart broken. We will be getting a 2nd opinion, not because we don't believe the doctor, just because we feel that we should get one. I'm looking for advice, encouragement, any kind of information I can get my hands on basically. Reading books is all and well, but I like advice from other moms who have been there or are there.
Thanks!
Re: Introduction - autism diagnosis ??
I'm not quite in the same position, but could be. My son is just under 12 months, so too young to diagnose, but we're worried because he's showing some red flags for autism spectrum (not responding to name, not pointing/gesturing, communication delays). We're seeing an ENT tomorrow (recurrent ear infections may be affecting his hearing and thus development), EI in a couple of weeks for an evaluation, and a developmental pedi in May. We'll see what happens.
The best advice I've gotten, which I'm trying hard to follow, is just to enjoy DS. No matter the diagnosis, if any, he's a wonderful kid that we have a lot of fun with. I'm trying to focus on his awesomeness, instead of what is and could be wrong.
Feel free to PM me anytime.
Ditto auntie. Do some interventions, just like you are doing-speech and OT. May not hurt to look into some other interventions for toddlers on the spectrum as well. There is a floortime/aba combo approach. Go back at age 3 and get re-evaluated. Use the dx now to get services. Early intervention does wonders for kids as young as yours.
Good luck. I am a mom of a kiddo with ASD, so feel free to PM me anything.
