D.C. Area Babies

What was your daycare "stalking" strategy?

We have a couple of daycares that we are more interested in than others (we are on 6 lists). I am due in April, and going back to work September 1. I was just curious what your strategy is/has been for keeping tabs on where you on the list etc. I have done some initial checking in, but it seems most centers can't really tell me much at this point. I figure after baby is born, I will do some in person visits etc. I have heard from people to "call every week," but I am not sure when to start that or if it is overkill.

Curious what has worked for you/what your plan is.

  • I think calling every week is overkill, especially since you'll have a long maternity leave. I called daycares to update our information after M was born, and then I think I called them again around halfway through my maternity leave to get an update on where we stood on their list. I was also planning to research in-home daycares around that time, but I got a call from one of the centers about a week later, offering us a spot. We ended up getting off of a second wait list a couple of weeks later.

  • Ditto the overkill. They're not going to move you up the list for extra interest, and they're not going to just skip you if you don't call. They'll call you.

Even if they told you something like "you're 14th on the list" it doesn't mean much because lots of people are on multiple lists, and decline the spot once called. Most places know that and would rather not be forced to guess on status.
