I never had a spinkle but I have been to a couple and have hosted a couple. They differ from a shower in that only really close family/friends are invited. Most people (all actually) brought diapers and/or clothes. The mom-to-bes did not register. Decorations were similar to a regular shower although nothing was "over-board". A couple were just luncheons and two were in the evening and had heavy appetizers. Dad-to-bes were not there at any of them. There really was no need for him to carry out gifts since it was just diapers and some clothes (no huge items like a crib, stroller, etc). Oh...two had games and two did not. Hope that answers your questions.
I just had one. My guest list was nine people (and four of them hosted) early on a Saturday evening. I only invited my mom, MIL and a few other friends. I do have a registry (for my DH and I to keep track of items we need/buy), but requested that the info not be put on the invite. The girls served heavy appetizers, lemonade, and wine. There were no games, a few pom poms and her name in painted letter for decorations, and we just hung out and chatted. I did receive some small things off my registry, but mostly received clothes and decorations for her room.
I hosted a sprinkle for DH cousins wife last year. It was about 10 people all family and very close friends. I treated everyone to brunch at a local restaurant. There were very few gifts. A couple of toys and some clothes. I got the MTB a gift cert to a spa she likes. We just hung out and chatted. I also did duck cut out cookies as little favors for everyone. It was fun. The MTB loved it.
