Natalie and Dominic are 12 months 4 days apart - not 2U1 but almost.
I actually found this age gap very doable - I had Dominic before Natalie was "fast" and she was easily occupied.......but.....she's also a very easy going child.
It's hard to predict how it will be, simply because your current baby's personality is still emerging. Natalie is such a happy go-lucky kid and nothing really phases her, that the transition was relatively easy.
The hardest part is leaving the house with all three of my kids.........
Mine are a little under 13 months apart and it has been doable for us. The positives outweigh the negatives for sure. I found pregnancy easy (even after a c-section) because I was able to rest a lot. When I was in 1st tri and exhausted all the time, my DS wasnt mobile and was sleeping a lot still. He got mobile when I hit 2nd tri, which was perfect timing since my energy returned. At the end of my pregnancy, he was still taking 3 naps a day so I got a ton of rest.
The transition when he came home was also really easy. He was too young to be jealous, and too independent to be phased by another baby. He learned to walk a little over a month before the baby came, so he was more interested in doing that. I've really enjoyed this gap so far.
How easy/difficult any age gap is dependent on the personalities of the children involved, and that's something you can't predict. 2u1 can be hard, but sometimes waiting can make things even harder, especially if your older child doesnt transition well to a new sibling. I would look at the bigger picture and see what works best for you. In 6 years from now it wont matter if your kids are 12 months or 24 months apart-it's pretty much going to be the same thing. The first year is generally the hardest and it will get easier from there.
There are several people on the board with 2 u 1 (myself not included). Mine are going to be about 20 months apart and I have to tell you being pregnant with a toddler sucks so that is something to consider. I'm worried about how it will go once we have a little one, particularly when I am alone with both of them.
Do you want 2 U 1 or even 2 U 2. It isn't just about what you're DH wants. How much help do you have aside from DH? Do you have to consider the implications of mat leave or are you home anyway.
Also did you have a c-section? I think a lot of doctor's recommend at least 6 months in between pregnancies to give your body time to heal
hocus.. you give good advice... I realized that our LOs will be the same age difference, then I saw your ticker.. I'm a week behind you. and DITTO on the "sucks being pregnant" with a toddler.. It is hard.. especially now that I'm wrestling to get her clothes on her since she recently became an exhibitionist/nudist-wanna-be. I'm so big already, it is hard to carry her upstairs, give her bath, put her in crib..

I'm surviving 2U1 and I'm 37. I'm exhausted by the end of the day. In a lot of ways, I think the timing of the pregnancy was pretty ideal. The 1st tri, DS still wasn't mobile, the second tri I felt better. The third tri was just awful (morning sickness and horrible hip pain), but luckily DH is a teacher and he was around most of the summer. Good luck with whatever you decide.
Almost. Mine are 12 months and 18 days apart. It's hard. I'm only now starting to see reciprocal interaction. I think in six more months it's going to be awesome, but the last five have been difficult. Definitely doable, but not easy.
Another thing to think about is the wear and tear of the second pregnancy. My second one was a lot harder than my first (and I don't have easy pregnancies). DD1 didn't start walking until a couple weeks before DD2 was born, so I was carrying her all the time while very pregnant. I'm exhausted. I feel like I haven't been well rested since before I got pregnant with DD1!
All that said, although we did not plan to have kids so close together, I know how blessed we are with our girls. Now that we're in it, I wouldn't have it any other way.
