the instructions say not to read them like a regular OPK. I assumed that the machine reads them the same way? but I'm not sure. I know on my + the lines we're not really the same darkness like on a regular OPK. not sure if that answers your question.

I asked this a day or two ago and the consensus was not to read them. BUT I will tell you when I get a smiley the two lines are equally dark. Most of the girls said they never get a fade in, it goes from no comparison to same.
I tested negative yesterday morning with a stark white stick, got a positive last night and the line was half as dark as the control, and got a positive this morning with the line almost as dark as the control. I don't have any fade in with the CBE digital OPK and the lines don't hold true for me in terms of being as dark as the control.

I used them two cycles- first one I had two + and when I ejected the stick both lines were the same darkness. Second cycle using them, 2 + again but this time the test line wasn't as dark as the control line. But then I am not sure I ended up Oing that time.
I know that doesn't answer you question, but it sounds like other people have had the same experience. They must not have to be as dark as the control line to be +.
