Can we talk reflux?

Well lo never officially had reflux but she spits up a ridiculous amount. Sometimes I hear weird sounds like she is struggling to spit up. She does not cry when she feeds or after but there are times when she seems uncomfortable by it. So nurse gave us zantac but said it would take up to a month to work and would not help with the spitting up. Is that true? I thought it would help spit up and it does not take that long to help us if we take zantac. Also how long has your lo been taking it? I am kind of on the fence about starting it. I want to if it will help. Thx

My understanding is that Zantac just help neutralize the acid so it doesn't burn when it comes up. I doesn't actually help the spit up. It did help my LO, but we eventually needed to add prevacid. I hope it works for your LO!

Most medications used for reflux, unless there's a severe case, will NOT stop the spitting up. If there's a severe case (failure to thrive), they doctors will use motility meds but their side effects are such that if a baby's still growing, they don't recommend 'em.

We're on Zantac. Works well forus. But Elsa's still a spitter. Always.

The way my pedi described it most babies have 'reflux' because their muscles to the esophagus to the stomach aren't mature enough to close on their own. When LO's learn to sit up in their own, that means that muscle is getting exercise and the spit up should lessen.

Or at least I think that's how she explained it. She has a heavy accent.

If your LO isn't having any issues (clear pain issues, screaming at feedings, arching the back a lot while feeding) and their gaining weight, the meds won't help the spit up at all, it just makes it less painful. Does the same thing for adults too.

This. Reflux meds just stop the burning, not the spitting. Zantac didn't work for my DD, but Prevacid is a wonder drug. But DD was very fussy before and after spitting up, so it was obvious when we found what worked. It was like night and day. She still spits...a LOT...but is rarely fussy now.
