Preemies

Baptism for preemie questions

When we were released from the NICU we spoke with the nurse about getting the boys baptized. They were in the NICU for 48 and 58 days. We have about 500 people that attend our church. She said that once RSV season is over in April that it would be a safer time to do it. She also suggested that we do it in the home if possible so we don't spread as many germs around.

Now the boys are 4 months old and are doing WONDERFUL. :) They will be 5 months old at the time of the baptism (April 10th). I was thinking about doing the baptism in the church but just after service. That way it will only be our guests there (28 people) and the pastor and nobody else. Our home is small and I really don't think we'd be able to fit 28 people in here.

What do you ladies think? What did you do when you were getting LO's baptized? How old were they? Of course I'm going to talk with the boys pediatrician today and ask her what she thinks as well, but I also wanted some opinions from fellow preemie moms :)

Re: Baptism for preemie questions

  • We had the boys baptised in our home, but the preist is a family member so we lucked out. :)
I think planning to do it after service with less people, in April, so RSV season is eanding is a good idea.

  • We had Jack baptised while he was still in the hospital. We knew that it would be a few months before we were comfortable having him around a big crowd of people and it was important for us to have him baptised. I would just make sure everyone knows to steer clear if they are sick and still wash their hands before touching the babies.

  • We didn't allow anyone other than a few select family members hold her or touch her.  There were about 100 people there and she was fine.  Unless you are going to pass the child around or let everyone touch, there shouldn't be much of an issue.

  • We waited until mid-May. DD was 8 mos, 6.5 mos adjusted. We did it during the service, but our church only has about 70 people at the service we go to, so it's not big. I think your plan sounds good.

  • We waited until they were 4 months old. We actually did it last month. At the church  my husband and I both held a baby since we have twins.  After at the reception they stayed in there carriages and at our table.Only we held them or our parents. Everyone knew enough to not ask to hold them.  They could come over to see them but that was it. It was nothing personal towards anyone but our way of keeping our babies healthy the best way we could during the RSV season.  Everyone understood and were just happy to be part of the celebration and to see them.  Even if they were not preemies, I personally don't like to see an infant passed around, not just because of germs but it stresses them out.
