Coop's RSV finally seemed to be over about 7-10 days ago. Last night he started getting a runny nose and cough again. I took him to the doc this afternoon to make sure it wasn't another ear infection, and doc said definetly beginnings of a cold but no ear infection (and no wheezing). Doc said wheezing might come back since he hasn't been over RSV for that long, he said to give breathing treatments if it did. Well around 6 the wheezing came back, I gave him a breathing treatment around 8, but honestly from 6-8 tonight he's gone from bad to worse (and at 4, when we were at the doc, it looked just like a mild cold)
Just curious if any one else had the RSV go away and come back, or if their first cold after the RSV was just worse than a normal cold because of the RSV.
***so glad I resigned last week and don't have to go to an 11 hour training tomorrow, b/c it looks like it might be a long night!
Re: Mom's whose kids have had RSV come in...???
Sorry to hear your little guy isn't feeling so great. My DS had RSV as an infant and I remember how awful it was. We did breathing treatments for a while too. Each cold he had after that, he would tend to start wheezing again so I would bring out the neb again. I really don't remember at what point that stopped happening, but it did. He hasn't used the breathing treatments in several years now (he's 6).
I was told that there may be a correlation between babies with RSV and children who have asthma later on. Luckily for us, this wasn't the case and he just outgrew it. Hopefully Coop will do the same. GL and hang in there Momma!
This is what happened to us and right now we are essentially treating M for asthma (family history + RSV + the way he reacts to colds), though they don't really call it asthma when they are this young. M NEVER just gets a cold/runny nose like other kids. His colds last 2-4 weeks and he eventually gets the hacking cough and wheezing. Breathing treatments, humidifier, propped bed and warm tea with honey before bed are our standard treatments. Now at the first sign of a cough we've worked with our pedi and start an inhaler and nebulizer routine that seems to help.
So to answer your question, yes. If the nebulizer stops relieving the symptoms I'd take LO back to the pedi and discuss a new treatment but truthfully, IME all the treatments for breathing/wheezing are just about the same only in different formats that may or may not work better. If the nebulizer is working, it's unfortunately just a waiting game :-( From what my pedi has discussed, they are finding that untreated breathing conditions are a much greater concern than over-treating, so there's no worry in using the nebulizer too much as long as its working.
This sounds like Cooper exactly!!!! I really am starting to lean towards the allergy/asthma spectrum. If they pedi mentions daycare one more time I might scream. Coop is at home with me or my sitter and since Christmas he's been too sick to take anywhere. He might have 3-4 days every 2 weeks he's healthy. The rest of the time it is like the cold from hell with hacking cough and wheezing.
Ughhh! I'm sick of him being sick! I'm sure he's tired of it too! Thanks for the info on not worrying about over treating, it's been a fear of mine and I've been holding out for things to get really bad before using it.
