TTC After a Loss

Hysterosonogram

Hi ladies,

My husband and I had a mc on 9/17 at 8w and DnC 9/18. During my 2 ultrasounds, they found that I have a decent size fibriod on my uterus. They don't think this is the reason for the mc, but depending on the size and location it could have an affect on future pregnancies. I had my DnC follow up yesterday and the doctor said it has not shrunk back to a small size and recommended a hysterosonogram to figure out if it is in the uterine cavity or in the walls of the uterus. Have any of your had a hysterosonogram? Are they painful?

Any one have any experience with fibroids?

 TIA,

Nitsa

Re: Hysterosonogram

  • I had a hysterosonogram. They're not that bad. The worst part is when they place the catheter in the cervix. It wouldn't hurt to take a few ibuprofen before you go and make sure you relax for that part. The saline feels a little weird and cold but I wouldn't say it's painful. Other than that, it's a piece of cake! Good luck!

  • I'm sorry to hear about your loss.

I had one a few weeks ago and for me it was a bit painful, but from reading other people's experiences I feel like I am not the norm.  The one reason it was a bit more uncomfortable for me is the doc could not get the catheter in and so when it finally went in it was not fun.  The dye injected into your uterus and tubes was a bit painful for me but it only lasted a few moments.  I had period like cramps for the rest of the day afterwards.  Take some advil or tylenol before you go - I took 1,000 mg per the doctors suggestion.

Sorry I can't help you on the fibroids from personal experience but I had a friend that had them and had an HSG done and she said it was similiar to my experience.  Good luck.

  • I had one a few months ago since my AF never returned after my D&C. I actually found it rather uncomfortable but again, I don't think I'm the norm. My dr. said mine was probably as therapuetic as it was diagnostic becuase they believe that it probably helped "open me up" a bit. They found a little scar tissue but nothing major. It was discomfort that a few advils didn't make better.  I had a really nice dr. and tech who walked me through what they were finding which helped. For me it was a huge relief to know there wasn't a huge amount of scar tissue. HTH!

  • Should read that a few advils DID make the discomfort better-nothing major, I promise!

  • Thank you for the information. I will make sure to take a few Tylenol before hand.
  • Please correct me if I am wrong, but a hystosonogram is not the same as an HSG (hysterosalpingogram). The first one is where they inject saline into your uterus to assess if there is a septum or other thing in the way. An HSG is more of an xray that injects dye in the cervix and fallopian tubes to see if there is a blockage there.

I have a hystosonogram scheduled for Monday and when she told me that it shouldn't hurt, I said that I thought HSG were painful. She explained this was not an HSG and that it would be crampy but not painful.

    Good luck with your procedure.

  • I had both the hysterosonogram and HSG done just last week. Like the other girls have said, the doctor will insert a catheter in your cervix and inject saline and then use an internal ultrasound to look at your uterus. For me, it was incredibly painful (probably the worst pain I have ever felt in my entire life). But, he also told me I had a malformed uterus which may have contributed to the pain. Most people say it feels like really minor period cramps. Take advil ahead of time and try to relax. Good luck!
