Anyone ever hear of "Be the Match" (cord blood donation)?

My dad is a physician (retired), now running the medical side of a large, fortune 500 company. Be the Match has asked his company to become a sponsor / partner. He's never heard of them so he asked me to find out more about it. I work at a Children's Hospital, so I'm going to call hemotology now and see if they have heard of it. We both think it's a great idea b/c there really is no cord blood donation center here in south Florida...they wouldn't let me donate DD's blood, and I privately banked DS's blood.

Just figured I'd ask here too! Thanks :)

  • Nope.  We donated through someone else.

  • I don't know about their cord blood donation program, but I do know they also run a bone marrow donation programs.  A colleague of mine has leukemia and has been using Be The Match to help her family run drives to get people tested to donate marrow.

  • We live in Tampa and wanted to donate DS's cord blood but there were no programs available - crazy! We ended up banking it for personal use but we do wish there were a local program. Sorry I'm no help but I wanted to say keep us updated please :)

They're the National Marrow Donor Program - huge org, very reputable, they are "THE" blood stem cell people.  When you are on the bone marrow transplant list... they're the list.  They've recently expanded the registry to include cord blood.  When you donate cord blood it goes to a local blood bank - but the registry is maintained by BTM.

    HTH!

Thanks everyone!! This info def. helps! I'll pass it along to my dad. I think he's going to go ahead and be a sponsor.
