I am home with Leah, who is sick. I told her to go wash her hands after she went to the bathroom and then I could hear her calling me. I went to the closed bathroom door and it wouldn't open. She locked herself in. We have an older house (built in the 40s) and I couldn't even think of what the lock looked like, because I never use that bathroom. I kept trying to tell her to turn it this way and that, and I was looking to see how I was going to get this solid-wood door open...oh, the panic. After about five minutes, she managed to flip it open. My heart has NEVER beat that fast.
It did kind of leave me wondering, though...who would I have called to help me? The fire department? 911? I could never have gotten the door off the hinges or anything, because they are all interior, and the window to the outside was locked (both the storm window and the window itself). Any ideas in case (God willing, I won't need it) this happens again?
Re: Oh, heart attack moment....
I probably would have called the non-emergency dispatch number. A toddler locked in the bathroom is an urgent situation, but not an immediate danger.
ETA: I'm glad she's okay, and that you didn't have to bust down the door!
