Oh, heart attack moment....

I am home with Leah, who is sick. I told her to go wash her hands after she went to the bathroom and then I could hear her calling me. I went to the closed bathroom door and it wouldn't open. She locked herself in. We have an older house (built in the 40s) and I couldn't even think of what the lock looked like, because I never use that bathroom. I kept trying to tell her to turn it this way and that, and I was looking to see how I was going to get this solid-wood door open...oh, the panic. After about five minutes, she managed to flip it open. My heart has NEVER beat that fast.

It did kind of leave me wondering, though...who would I have called to help me? The fire department? 911? I could never have gotten the door off the hinges or anything, because they are all interior, and the window to the outside was locked (both the storm window and the window itself). Any ideas in case (God willing, I won't need it) this happens again?

Re: Oh, heart attack moment....

  • I probably would have called the non-emergency dispatch number.  A toddler locked in the bathroom is an urgent situation, but not an immediate danger.

ETA: I'm glad she's okay, and that you didn't have to bust down the door!

  • first, change the doorknob! we've got the kind in our house that you just push a button but we have a generic key above the doors that unlock them (it looks like a flat allen key). in any case you wouldve called 911, i dont know if the door or window would be intact after the visit

  • Holy moses!  That is truly a freak-out moment.  Justin did it once when he was littler, and I had no idea where the key was to unlock the door.  I had to call DH in a panic.  I'm glad you got her out without too much drama.

  • Holy cow! I don't know what I would have done. Like pp said, can you change the doorknob? My parents also used to tape the doors because my sister liked to play that game, too.
