Breastfeeding

Any experience with a SNS?

My daughter who is 4 days old, has a cleft palete (palete only - not affecting her lips, gums, or primary palete) and I'm a very sad breastfeeding mama who wanted that special time for more than just nutrition. I'm working on grieveing the loss of that in total (she can't make negative suction in her mouth to nurse).

She is, however, a very strong little gal and has a GREAT latch - she just needs milk to stay motivated to stay at the breast. I want to have this opportunity with her not only for the bonding but also for the antibody build and transfer.

I'm wondering what your opinions on SNSs are - like lact-aid and Medela's brand?

Thoughts? Input? Suggestions?

It wouldn't be for every feeding as I get that its time consuming, potentially messy, etc.

Thanks!

Re: Any experience with a SNS?

  • I used a Medela SNS when my LO was like 4 weeks old for like 2 weeks because he had a poor latch and I had a low supply.  I ordered mine from Amazon and I went with the Medela brand. Once I figured out how to use it, I didn't think it was bad at all.  It does take a little time to set it up and get it figured out.  I guess I'd say that like you, nursing was really important to me, so I made it work.
