when did you stop waking to feed at night?

Annie is on an ad lib schedule, but shes not to go more then 4 hours in between feeds.  I set my alarm at night and often have to wake her up to eat.  Sometimes she wakes up just fine and chugs away at her bottle.  But the last several nights shes been really sleepy and just doesn't want to wake up, which makes feeding her a little challenging.  As a result she ends up eating far less then she normally does.  She makes up for it at the next feed - but I'm wondering at what point were you given the ok to let them sleep as long as they want at night?

Re: when did you stop waking to feed at night?

  • It was exactly like that for us for the first 3 weeks. Some feedings went better than others. I bf and we give fortified bottles 2-3 times per day. I asked her pediatrician at her 2 week appt this question and because she was successfully gaining, had not yet lost since we'd been home (almost 1 week), he said it was ok to let her dictate at night but continue to feed her every 3-4 hours during the day.

She is still waking every 2-3 hours most nights but is only 37.3 weeks old today. I am guessing we still have some time ahead of us before she sleeps more than 3 hours in a row.

My beautiful girls: Hadley 9.28.06, Emmerson 11.29.08 and Pilar 2.07.11, born premature at 33.3 weeks.

  • Our Neos gave us the ok to let ds sleep through the night before we were even discharged. I'd say as long as your pedi is happy with weight gain, let her sleep. She'll wake if she's hungry.

  • My pedi said after 10lbs- they were concerned that if she got sick she wouldn't have enough extra weight to pull her through. Every pedi is different, so I would ask them when they think you should drop the feed.
