Zoo question - timing and crowds

We are going to the zoo for Evan's birthday party this Saturday and I was wondering how crowded it may be around 10:00 AM. My mom was talking to one of her friends this past week who went to the zoo a couple of weekends ago and she was saying how horribly crowded the zoo was, but they didn't get there until noon.

I plan on leaving by that time. I think 1 1/2 to 2 hours will be enough for Evan. We will either have lunch at the zoo or somewhere close to Hermann Park.

Any ideas? I didn't really plan the day out because my ILs are not good at keeping to a schedule and I don't want to get up set when I already know it will happen. Our only hard timeline is to get to the zoo by 10:00 and get Evan home by 3:00 for his afternoon nap.

  • Sadly, the earliest we can get there is probably 10. My ILs are coming from out of town and staying with us. They aren't morning people (when we stayed with them last month they didn't wake up until 10 am) and to get to the zoo by 10 we will need to leave our house by about 9:15.

My parents are coming from the north side of town and would be there at 9:00 if I asked them to. Ah, the things we do to avoid arguements.

  • It's not going to be as bad at 10 as it will at 11, but it is significantly better at 9.

Parking is going yo be a PITA, but just be patient.  Also Beck's Prime is opening up there where Little Bigs used to be, but I'm not sure if they are going to be open yet.  However, the cafe at the African exhibit is pretty good if you want to eat in the zoo

  • This Saturday is the beginning of spring break. I don't know if that will mean more crowds or not. I know it means INSANE crowds during the weekdays. And by insane I mean that the street leading to the zoo was blocked off at 9:30am with a "zoo parking full" sign and police.

Oh good grief! My mom said that she and dad will be there at 9:30. I wonder if we can get the ILs there a little early by having an early Starbucks run. My brother can just show up whenever, but I know he freaks out about parking.

Thanks for all of the advice, ladies! I think we will see if Beck's is open or eat at the African exhibit.
