Success after IF

RSV negative, but difficulty breathing, any ideas?

My little boy was admitted to the hospital yesterday and we are still here for observation.  He has had a cold this past week but his breathing became really bad Saturday night.  Currently, he gets treatment every 4 hours with an inhaler.

I'm getting worried because the doctors want to keep watching him even though the RSV test came back negative today.  Any ideas on what is going on?  Have you had something similar happen to your LO?

  • Yeah DS has Asthma, he did have RSV when he was a bay and he also had Brochiolitis.

  • My first thought was asthma...has he been tested for it?  Or bronchitis?  So sorry to hear this!

  • I am so sorry you are dealing with this, I know how scary breathing problems can be.  I have a few thoughts as I basically spend all of my free time lately researching breathing issues...

Asthma like pps have said.  Does he have reflux?

Reactive Airway Disease which is just coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath and there is no real diagnosis.   In combination with this and the asthma I would wonder about allergies and if something that just popped up is bothering his airway.

Is it possible that although he doesn't have RSV now he had a bad cold earlier this year that could have been RSV?   RSV can really wreck havoc on their airways that can last for months on end so even a cold can cause wheezing after the RSV itself has gone away.   I would also wonder about bronchitis.

  • Asthma?

I'm not sure what it's called, but I had a couple LO's at the DC I worked at that had enlarged adenoids that would make it harder for them to breath when they were sick.

Thinking of your family and hoping you get some answers soon.

  • DS spent 2 days in the local children's hospital last month for a respiratory virus that isn't RSV - it's called human metapneumovirus (spelling might be wrong).  It's essentially a cold in adults, but in children under 2 it can be more severe, and in tiny infants (DS was 4 weeks old) it can be really serious.  Luckily, his case never got too bad, and they sent us home pretty quickly.

  • I am sorry that your DS is in the hospital!  I hope he is better soon!  And ditto MichelleL - could be metapneumovirus, if RSV is negative.  It could also be flu - did they check him for that?  Good luck and I hope he is better soon!

  • the first time ronnie had a bad breathing episode, they were able to calm it down enough with breathing treatments and a steroid shot that we were sent home...they just said at the time it was bronchitis (he had a cold at the time), but we determined with the pedi the next day that he has asthma, that was aggravated by the cold, and his allergy to dogs..it was really really scary :(

he is now on a daily breathing treatment, and has to do additional treatments when he has a cold or anything..

so maybe it could be asthma?
