Suggestions on last bottle

So yesterday we decided to try to go cold turkey with the last two bottles...first bottle replaced, went fine. Sat down in the same place on the couch we normally do bottles and handed him his sippy and he leaned back against me and drank it himself and handed it to me when he'd had enough, went right down for his nap.

Second bottle...before bed time. Did the same thing, but when I went to sit him down on the couch (instead of laying down for the bottle) he spazzed and layed out and screamed. When I tried to hand him the sippy, he lost it and just threw a fit. So after a couple of minutes of trying to calm him down and try again, we decided he wasn't ready and gave him his bottle instead.

Soo...is he just not ready to give up that last one? DH suggested giving him his sippy on the floor instead since that seemed to throw him off, would that work? I was trying to keep the sitting on the couch thing as that's part of the before bedtime routine, so he'd realize, ok I drink this and then it's bedtime, just like before but without a bottle. I'm ok with giving him more time, just curious now if anyone else had issues with the last bottle and had suggestions.
TIA!

Re: Suggestions on last bottle

  • When we dropped DD's last bottle (also the bed-time bottle), she stopped drinking before bed. The first night we tried to sub the sippy cup for the bottle and had a similar experience to what you described. The next time, I gave her milk with  dinner and at bedtime we read books in the rocker and then she went down with nothing. There was more crying before going to sleep then normal, but she was asleep in 20 minutes. After that, the crying to sleep was less and less each night for the week and now we have no problems at all. It's been 3 weeks. I definitely miss giving her a bottle before bedtime, but she doesn't seem to miss it at all now. They get so big so fast!

  • When we got rid of C's bottles, we replaced the bottle routine with a completely new routine.

We ate dinner, played, had a bath, read books, then put on some bedtime music for sleeping.  I think replacing the bottle with a sippy is more difficult for baby.
