Best way to head off stained clothes?

DS is a train wreck when it comes to clothes. He has stained every single piece he owns. I can get most stains out, but have noticed that some clothes stain easier than others. Do you know of a brand or brands of clothes that might not stain as easily (quality of fabric?) or ways I can try to keep his clothes stain free? I use shout advanced on every stain and it works for most. What that doesn't work for I soak in washing soda. If taht doesn't work then its done for. But because of this, DS goes through clothes like you wouldn't believe. He's had so many clothes in his current size 24 m/2T and already gone through a whole wardrobe of shirts (most of which were secondhand) and trashed them. I had no idea boys were this much more messy than girls!

  • DS is also that way.  I never buy him light colors or anything really nice anymore.  My most common problem is that clothes get really wet and then mildew.  I wash every couple days at most but now I'm going to start soaking his clothes (in a little rockin green) until I wash them.  I don't have any great tips because it seems like you are doing the right things.  Mrs Meyers baby stain remover is pretty good if your stain product isn't doing the job.

  • Is washing soda the same as oxygen bleach?

I find that a lot of stuff comes out if you let it do a soak in hot w/ oxygen bleach- overnight if possible...

Some stuff just gets trashed though.  I think that fabrics that have any polyester in them are more likely to "hold" a stain...

  • By washing soda do you mean borax? I hadn't thought to try that.

I use oxy stain remover, leave that on for a while, and that usually takes care of most "organic" stains (food, bodily fluid) if I do it right after the stain-making event.

I do find that a lot of stuff from Old Navy, Target, and TCP brands don't hold up as well to lots of washing (and I do dry mostly in the dryer this time of year). Brands I find to hold up the best are (from good to best):  babyGap, Gymboree, Lands End, and Hanna Andersson. (I know the latter is very $$ but I have a few things I've gotten 2nd hand, DS has worn them to death and they still look great -- so worth it if you have a OUAC or something). I'm lucky to have good consignment/garage sales where I live.
