Babies on the Brain

"Please don't do this to your child"

Random vent.

To borrow a phrase from Blair, that phrase really chaps my ass.

I see it all the time in the baby name posts. DH and I will most likely use a Gaelic name for our child, especially if it's a boy. It really pisses me off when I see people say that in some posts. It's not a made up name just because you're not sure how to pronounce it.

Just cause you like it. Lol.?

  • Annoys me too. Similar to my rant yesterday. I just don't like people telling others what to do.
  • I'm pretty sure our name choice will be mocked by friends and family, not to mention strangers.

Which is why I am not telling.?

  • Hey what you name your child is your business Smile
  • NO flames coming from this corner.  I agree 100%.
  • I agree.

Now if someone posts names and asks for opinions and I don't like the name I will tell them that it's NMS, and would expect the same in return.  I could care less what they name their kids though and would never tell someone to not name their kid what they want.  It's not my decision.

  • No flames from me.  My son's name is Killian.  And while that is not the most difficult of the Gaelic/Celtic names out there, you'd be suprised at how many people want to call him by his last name because it's easier.
  • AMEN ! I 100% agree

  • I do agree that what people name their child is their decision, however I will certainly voice an opinion if asked or if it's a complete stupid name (such as "bus stop" or "l-a" pronounced ladasha).

Killian is hard? Wow. Just sound it out.

    BTW. I love the name.

    Thanks!

And yes, I knew one lady that just couldn't wrap her tongue around his name and kept calling him "Gilligan".  I'm like, he's not on a 3 hour tour!!

  • I agree. But I also say that if I am asked in a poll if I like a name, I will tell you the truth...and if I don't like the name I will tell you - no matter what its country of origin is. But I really do agree with the fact that names are not made up just because you can't pronounce it. And that goes for a lot of the more "ethnic origin" names. Just because its not an "American" name does not mean its automatically "made up."

  • Honest opinions are great. If I don't like a name, I tell someone it's NMS. I just hate that particular rude response people get when they post an "ethnic" name. I saw that in an old post below that was *bumped* up.

Our boy, if we ever have one, will most likely either be named Ciaran or Declan.

The thing is, those actually ARE made up names.

  • heather - I love the name Declan, and Ciaran too actually.  Big Smile  I know you didn't ask but I had to throw that out there.

Ditto, our boy name is set in stone and nobody will know what it is until my (unconceived) son is pushed out of my vag hole

"I stammered, unable to form a coherent thought because I have a vagina."

  • Exactly Heather - real made up names I will actually make fun of. Ethnic names, not at all. I love your name choices by the way, especially Ciaran.?
  • lol, thanks leslie.

  • Heather, I like the names you chose.  Not that you asked for my opinion.  I agree - it's no one else's business what you name your child so that "please don't do that to your child" shouldn't be said.

FWIW, I never said what M's real name is b/c I don't want to deal with having to explain it.  It's not one of the most common names, but it is a name that most people would know.  But, we spelled it different than "normal."  And, we did so b/c he was named after someone.  Not because we thought it would be youneek.

  • I always try to be honest without being a jerk when someone asks for name opinions. I asked about using a name on here once - it was my last name and I said in my OP that it was- and someone said it sounded like a nasty disease. It doesn't IMO and I love my maiden name so I was a little taken aback that someone would be so insensitive.

  • I don't understand how people have the b@lls to say to a parent that they don't like their kid's name. I've had family tell me that they didn't like the name Rebecca. Ummm...F you. What H and I name our kids is our business, and it was my maternal grandmother's name.

  • I totally understand.  My kids are most likely going to have gaelic names as well.  People looks at me like I have two heads when I say I like Roisin and Aisling for girls, especially when I spell them out.

Hmm, I don't remember, and I've seen that movie a bunch of times. A character in Brotherhood is named that, DH and I liked the sound of it.

For pp who asked, it's pronounced deck-lan (accent on the first syllable) and means "full of goodness" according to this site: https://babynamesworld.parentsconnect.com/meaning_of_Declan.html

  • i've heard some grief over porter.  "trying to make it easy for him to choose a profession, eh?"  Confused  "is that a name from your lineage or something?"  no, we just like it thanks.

but my fav came from my bff (maid of honor in my wedding).  she actually said to me, "you are NOT naming your kid after a beer, tell me you're kidding!" pfft.  i still love her though.

i love killian!  lol, that would be great for the next one since it would go along with the beer theme we've got going on.  and it's so much better than stout.  ;P

  • agh people are so annoying.

I mentioned to my friend that i wanted to name a little girl Carys (pronounced Care-ys) and he was like "Thats made up" - no its welsh you moron.

  • Well . . . I agree that I would never volunteer a statement like that.  But if someone asked for opinions on a name and I really thought it was out there (and there was no accompanying statement explaining the ethnic or family link) I can see that statement being used and not entirely invalid.  I would probably never say it, but there are certainly times (l-a, for instance) where I think it is not inappropriate.

FWIW, I lurve Ciaran (Ciaran Hinds.  Drool over the wonderful actor) and Declan is cool.

Oh, I've gotten the beer comment on Killian before!  And it doesn't help any that the kid has red hair.  That was just pure coincidence.

I am wrong, it was the Jackal (Richard Gere's character) LOVE THAT MOVIE!
