NSAHR: Birthday Ideas for 18-year-old?

I have a friend - who I think of more as a little brother - who is turning 18 next month.  Today, I asked him what day it was.  After telling me, he made a point to tell me that he had never had a real birthday party before (his family is Jehovah's Witness, and doesn't 'believe' in celebrating birthdays, I guess).  He was obviously fishing for an offer, so I offered to throw him a party.  He agreed, rather ecstatically.

Here's the dilemma: I have no idea what to do.  It has to be something that is inexpensive, but suitable for a large group of people.  If it were anyone else, I would simply put together a birthday dinner, with gifts and cake.  But, this kid has never had a birthday party before, so I want to make it special somehow.

Any ideas?

  • Do you have something like a Dave & Busters near you? Its like an adult Chucky E Cheese with games and food and whatknot. Maybe something there?

  • We do have a Dave & Busters, but I think he'd be overwhelmed by it.  He was home-schooled and raised in a very closed community, consisting almost entirely of blood relatives.  He has built many close relationships with people at our Festival, but beyond that group, he still tends to be very shy.

Besides, D&B's tends to send me into panic attacks (I hate loud, flashy places - Las Vegas is my worst nightmare).

  • Paintball is a great idea. . . I will have to check out prices around here, and see if I can pull it off . . .

     Thanks!
