All I want is a turkey sandwich!

I've been craving a turkey sandwich.  That's all I want!  I asked my doctor about it at my 8 week appt and she said NO lunch meats.  I know lots of people eat it everyday, and some people say to heat the lunch meat to steaming (but this turns me off from the idea).

I'm just having a hard time because if the dr told me not to have it, and then I do, I'd feel guilty....

Anyone want to convince me one way or the other?  I just want to go to Publix and get a Boar's Head turkey sub with provolone cheese, mayo, lettuce and tomatoes.

Re: All I want is a turkey sandwich!

  • I've had about a million turkey sandwiches since I've been pregnant. Sometimes I heat the meat, sometimes I don't. My Dr. said it was okay if I heated it up, but I'm really not much of a paranoid person.

    I'd say go for it.

  • I have only had cold cuts once and I had them heat them up. It really wasn't that bad and helped with my craving.

  • Maybe this is wrong, but couldn't you heat it up and then pop it in the fridge to chill again? Hot deli meats gross me out too.  The heat kills the potential bacteria, so.... I would think that would work and you could eat it cold!

?  Seems logical, but then again...

From what I understand, no, this does not help.  When you put it back in the fridge to cool, the bacteria can start growing on it again, so it defeats the purpose of heating it in the first place.

  • Ugh. Now I don't want my leftovers, I want a turkey sub. I've had them several times, and they were delicious! Hmm...I may run over to Subway in half an hour.

  • I wonder if "toasting" the sandwich will help?  The place I want to get the sub, I don't even think they have a sandwich toaster, but maybe I can ask.
  • I crave turkey sandwiches all the time too.  I tried heating it up and eating it, but YUCK not even close to appetizing.  What I have found to really work for me is to heat the meat, throw it on my hoagie, put some provolone on top and broil the sandwich for a few minutes.  It is the best way to go about it and still really quick!!!  However, I do not believe a cold meat sandwich every now and then is terrible.....I may have done it once because I really, really, really needed it.

  • Man, now I really want a turkey sandwich too!! I have had a couple.  My doctor just says everything in moderation, so if I am really craving it, I go for it.  I was super paranoid in the beginning, but I felt silly after telling my sister about the deli meat and she had no idea what I was talking about.  She just had her 3rd healthy baby 2 years ago and had never heard about this and ate tons of deli meat in all her pregnancies.  It is very rare for it to harm you- so if you have one or two your whole pregnancy I think you will be fine.  But it is up to you of course!

  • I've had a few turkey sandwiches since I've been pregnant (never heated) and I'm having one today! Panera turkey sandwiches are my favorite and I've been craving it, so I'm going to. My doctor said the chance of anything happening is so slim, so to go ahead and get them once in a while.

  • I've not really followed the lunchmeat rule. Mostly what I've eaten has been toasted subs but I've had some that I've not heated. And I've eaten hotdogs several times too. I say go for it.

  • I agree with the others. Just go eat one!
I have been craving cold turkey sandwiches too, and have had more than a handful during this pregnancy.

  • I was concerned about this in the beginning, so I was heating it up or eating only toasted sandwiches and paninis. Then I said, I was being ridiculous.  I don't eat it everyday but every once in a while, when I have a craving I will have a sandwich.  I had a turkey tom from JJ's yesterday & it was so amazing, I think I could have easily eaten two.

  • I asked my dr about this yesterday and he said that it is fine to have deli meat.  If I am nervous about it, get the meat sliced fresh from the deli and don't eat the pre packaged stuff.  Also, sandwiches in restaurants are fine, but if you want to check with your dr first that is completely understandable.

  • Hey there! (Coming out of lurking to throw in my two cents!) IMO I say follow the advice of your doctor. She must think the risk is greater, otherwise she would've said it was ok. However, I can be kind of a worrier. ::going back to my lurking status:: :)
  • Like other people said, Girl, eat the sandwich!  Heat it up and call it a day.  I had my ham and cheese fix yesterday.

  • I eat a cold cut sandwich about once per week, not heated up.  I guess I'm just not overly paranoid.  I think that having one would be fine, but that's just me.

I was told the pre-packaged meat is less of a concern than the fresh deli meat.  The reason being, you don't know how long the deli meat has been sitting out in the case.  I guess you do not know how long the pre-packaged meat had been sitting out before it had been packaged either, but it is assumed that it is not very long.  That is they way my doctor explained it to me.

This is exactly what my dr. said. Even if you get it from the deli and they slice it in front of you - that big hunk of meat has been sitting in the open air deli case and that causes the bacteria to grow - even in a reputable place.

It's all a comfort thing, if you are comfortable eating it, then it eat - if you are going to worry than don't eat one.

  • The only craving I've had this pregnancy is a Turkey & Avocado sandwich from Togo's.  I went ahead and treated myself to it a couple weeks ago.  But, I'm not going to tell you to eat a sandwich...you have to decide if it's worth the risk, and if it concerns you enough to avoid it.  I just wanted to say that for me - it was worth the (teeny tiny) risk.  GL.

  • its funny, i was never a huge deli sandwich eater before, but now that its off limits, I am craving a ham & cheese or a Turkey sandwich (w. mayo and I don't even like mayo...). I haven't had any as the thought of microwaving it is so unappealing. However, I did find this diner near my work that makes sandwiches out of freshly roasted turkeys so I am going to try that as soon as the weather is better as its a bit of a walk (snow is almost all gone, yeah!). So check around, you may find someplace that uses that instead of deli turkey.

I may also cook a turkey breast on Sundays to have fresh turkey meat for a few days to take sandwiches to work.

  • I would eat it. I even had a bologna sandwich yesterday *gasp*. I was told it was more about the packaging for lunchmeat that was worrisome. If you heat it to steaming and then put it back in your fridge it's fine.  Bottom line is that just about everything in life can cause one problem or another. If I let myself think too much about it I would go crazy.  I think with a strong, healthy immune system (even in a pregnant woman) eating most food in moderation is fine.

If it makes you feel any better during this pregnancy I have had caffeine, feta cheese, cesear dressing, tuna sandwich from subway, 2 hotdogs and bologna. I feel great, baby is moving, growing and I'm not worried that I have made her sick in my belly because of my occaisional indulgence of a craving :)
