Costs for Prenatal Care & Delivery?

I was just wondering what other people are paying for their medical care? We have a good PPO insurance plan, but since my dr. is out of the network, not all of my expenses are covered. ?My doctor charges $11,000 for all of my prenatal visits and delivery. ?

That does not include tests such as my amnio, ultrasounds, blood work, etc. Fortunately, these are all done either at the hospital or through a lab and are billed to me separately....and I usually get better coverage for this since a lot of these facilities are in my network.

I realize since we live in NYC, some of our prices may be inflated compared to other parts of the country, but I still think it is A LOT!!!?

Re: Costs for Prenatal Care & Delivery?

  • $0 from BFP through delivery.

Why did you pick an out of network doc?

  • After insurance, I pay less than $400 total.  I'm not sure what it would be without insurance, but I bet it's a lot, because I live in CT and the cost of living is really high here (not as bad as NYC, though!)

  • Thanks to the Army, I pay zip for routine medical necessities. The downside? No frills like 3D/4D u/s and I only get one u/s.
  • $500 BCBS of GA . for everything including tests and lab work.
  • That is alot.  We are paying $250 for everything including hospital care. I haven't had any copays at any of my appts.

  • Yeah, that is a lot. Is it really worth it to go out of your network for that high of a price? I had to pay $30 for my first doctors visit. All the other visits, including u/s, bloodwork, whatever, are included in this. Then for the hospital stay I will have to pay $250 for everything, regardless of what happens.

  • My OB charges $2600 for everything. We of course pay out of pocket for most of the blood work, but other than that and the hospital, we pay nothing. My deductible is $3500, so max we will pay $900 for the hospital! I thought that was a lot, but $11,000?!?!?!?!??! Whoa!
  • MrsL.inMarch and TimingisEverything:

I go to a specialist because of a prior issue and surgery I had, it wasn't an option for me to switch doctors.

  • $10 copay for the first appt, and then $250 for delivery.  Bummer that it is so much for you!!!
  • My Dr. at the Stamford CT hospital averages $5000 according to their pamphlet.

  • For us; prenatal care, delivery and post delivery for my doctor is $3,300 for vaginal and $3700 for c-section (before insurance pays) and we pay $366 and some change plus a one time co-pay of $35 (not really sure where they got this number from).

That covers everything, but ultrasounds, blood work, anesthesia, assist. surgeon fee (if needed) and anything not considered routine (sinus infection etc.). and with these we pay 20% of the cost.

Sounds confusing when I write it out.

    Oh, gotcha.

  • For DS the total delivery and post-pardum bill was $10K+.  We have $3000 max out of pocket so that's what we paid.
  • My OB's practice charges $5,000.00 for everything. My insurance covers 100% of the cost so I pay nothing. I see a perinatologist as well, the only thing I have to pay with him is a $20 co pay for my 4d ultrasounds.
  • we pay $250 for the hospital stay. That's all. If you can/ try to make sure your baby will be covered as an in-network patient (is your hospital in-network?) My cousin didn't have insurance and her baby ended up in the NICU for 4 days. Her bill for delivery and post-care was $22,000.

?Yes, fortunately, the hospital is in-network, so the bulk of my costs will have been the prenatal visits.?

  • Ouch! I'm also in NY (and have GHI insurance, the CBP PPO Plan- my husband is a public school teacher in Brooklyn) and we are not reponsible for anything- except- $15 co pay whenever they draw blood (which has been twice). They've paid for all the Ultrascreens, tests, visits, ultrasounds, etc. I also have a specialist, but luckily they were in network and practice in both the city as well as where our house is in LI. All hospital incidentals are covered in full as well (anestetic, lactation consult, etc) as long as I do the pre-certification.

Anyway, as those of us in the city are used to paying more (have you looked into child care- I almost died), this still seems a bit high to me.

  • My doc charges $3000 for prenatal care and delivery. I will have to pay about $600 of that.
  • Your in NY - Me too. What hospital are you going to for delivery?
  • My doc office has a global fee - for vaginal it's $2700 - and extra for all labs and u/s.  I have a $2000 out of pocket maximum per year - so I won't be paying all of that - I only have to pay the doc $500 and then whatever balance is leftover after all my u/s and bloodwork that will be what I owe the hospital.

The cost of child care is ridiculous! ?I will be staying at home, by the time we paid for child care and all my work related expenses, it was worth it for me to just stay at home! ??

  • Wow...sorry you have to pay so much! I am fortunate enough to have double medical coverage, so like Mrs.L, I pay nothing.

    ?NY Presbyterian. ?What about you??

  • Ladies...does this include your co-pay?

Oops..I meant deductible...do the costs you all are mentioning include your deductible?

  • $0 birth through delivery (depending on delivery method).

Maybe try a different doc.  That seems rediculous!

Yeah, I heard it was good. ?I don't think you can go wrong with any of the big NYC hospitals. ??

  • My doctor charges $4000 for all appointments and delivery (this does not include u/s and bloodwork-which I do pay out of pocket)  I don't know what the hospital stay will total.  My deductible is $2500 and then it is 100% covered so no matter what I am paying $2500 and not more or less.

    No, the deductible is separate.?

No, the deductible is separate, but I had already met mine for the year beforehand.?

  • I pay $15 co-pay for my doctor visits, and i'll have to pay $250 for each day i'm hospitalized. I pay nothing for ultrasounds or blood work.

I'm also a special case, I have to have weekly b12 shots and a series of IV iron infusions soon. I'm also on an injectable called Lovenox for prior blood clot issues. I pay $25 for a 30 day supply of that drug.

  • I'm sorry to hear about your large delivery expense. I'm also in NYC.  We have Empire EPO.  I paid $30 for the first visit and everything else included 1st trimester screening, quad screen, and 2nd semester BPP US are covered.  I would have had to pay $400 for a private room, but I'm a resident at Columbia, so it's provided as a courtesy.
  • I'll have to ask about prices at my appointment next week, but my max out-of-pocket for next year is $1500 (90% coverage after $150 deductible) so I know I'll be paying no more than that for labor and delivery.  This year, I only had to pay $30 for the first OB/GYN visit and all subsequent office visits are covered at 100%.  This is a huge relief after paying about $11k out of pocket this year for fertility treatments not covered at all by my insurance.
  • It will cost me $605 total, including post-delivery care
