Lotion for impending stretch marks

When do you suppose is a good time to start using the "prevent" stretch marks lotion? I realize that stretch marks have a power of all their own, so it's impossible to completely avoid them - but hopefully there's something out there that can help reduce the visibility.

I sound like a weather person.

Any recommendations of what kind to use?

  • I use Motherlove Pregnant Belly Salve. I think I started using it around 3-4 months last time.

LOL.  no lotion prevents stretch marks. Some people used lotion and got them, some didn't. Those that didn't were never going to get them anyway. The lotion will likely make your skin less itchy before it breaks, but its likely not going to stop stretch marks.

If they run in your family, or if you have some from puberty, chances are you will get them.

Don't worry, though. They fade to almost nothing.

    This.

Everything I've read says it's genetic and that lotions don't do anything except keep your skin moist (so you don't itch).  If you're going to get them, you're going to get them.  Women who use lotion and don't get stretch marks would have had the same results without using lotion.

  • Unfortunitely, if you are genetically destined to get them, no amount of lotion will help. I think it's a marketing gimmick to make women think they can prevent them by dropping a ton of $$ on various lotions.

  • Everything in my genetic books says I am going to get them! And I expect it and am acceptable of it. If anything, I'd appreciate the moisture effects - I can't stand being itchy!  I'm pretty sure my 2-pc. swimsuit days are over :) Well, I'll still go for tankinis, as I can't stand 1-pc. on me. No matter what, it's all worth it in the end! :)

  • That is what I have heard too (with pp commenting about lotions not helping the actual stretch marks because they will just come regardless if your body wants them to)

The other thing I have read a few times is that you are going to be more likely to get them if you are gaining weight too rapidly and not allowing your body/skin to adjust. I am wondering how true this is but my friend (who did get stretch marks during puberty) has slowly gained and hasn't gotten a single stretch mark (she is in her third trimester), whereas my other friend (who also got stretch marks during puberty), gained weight quickly (from eating WAY more than her 200-300 extra calories) and she had a stomach that looked like it was full of tiger stripes.....

  • Lotion will not prevent stretch marks. They are hereditary. It will help with the itchiness of the big belly later down the line though.

  • Once I hit the 37 week mark.. I started to get a few tiny ones on my belly.

After baby was born.. I put Bio-Oil on them, and they disappeared! Big Smile

  • I lotioned my ass off with my last pregnancy and had no stretch marks.....until the day before my induction.  They sneak up on you.  I was so upset!!
  • I have friends who swear by using Jafra Royal Almond Body Oil.  They were probably the lucky ones with good genetics but I plan to use this regardless...it smells awesome and will at least prevent me from itching, if nothing else.  This bottle each lasted them the entire pregnancy, with some left over at the end.

  • I am using Bert's Bees line for mommies.  I am using the Mama Bee Belly Balm at night before bed, and the Mama Bee Nourishing Body Oil after my showers.  I am using them on my bbs too in hopes I don't get stretch marks there either!!
  • I here everyone say that stretch marks are genetic.  I have trouble believing that 100%.  Does genetics play a role?  Sure.  But I have to say that my mom and sister don't have a single stretch mark on them.  I however, got a few on my thighs and hips.  My stomach was clear, but my thighs and hips did get them.  So how did I miss out on the genetic train (and I only gained 35 pounds)?  So I think that it's more of a genetic + lifestyle + fluke thing.

  • A lot of stretch marks has to do with genetics.  No lotion will cure that.  I used a pregnancy lotion through my entire first pregnancy and got stretch marks right in the last two weeks around my belly button.  Try what you like but that doesn't determine whether you get them or not, sorry:(

  • During my last prenancy, I did not have any stretch marks until AFTER my baby was born.  I don't know if the quick reduction in my belly caused it or what but they mostly faded about 3-4 months.  I did use Burt's Bees stuff and it helped with the itching.  When it ran out shortly before my due date, I started using regular lotion and got super itchy so recommend it for anti-itch purposes.

check what ever you put on your body at this website to see how safe it is, There was a study that showed that perfume that a mother put on ended up in her breast milk which just freaks me out, I have switched to the idea that "if I wouldn't eat it I won't put it on my skin." May be it is a little extreme but worth researching for yourself.

  • I have put Mederma for stretch marks on the ones on my thighs from puberty and it helped. I will be buying it (it's expensive) for my stomach this pregnancy. Despite having them bad on my hips, breasts, thighs and lower back from crazy growth spurts in puberty I didn't get 1 during pregnancy which both my mom and sister did. They also were tiny pre-pregnancy, and had minimal bumps/weight gain during pregnancy. So while you may predisposed to them, you don't always get them. Slow weight gain helps but doesnt always prevent.

Do you share every other genetic trait you have with your mom and sister? Um... no. Sometimes traits get passed along and sometimes they don't. My mom had them and I didn't get them with DD. You don't see me calling shennanigans on the whole deal. Use your noodle woman!
