Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Did you all strap large furniture to the wall?

If so what all did you strap down (to the wall) and what did you use to do it?  We live in a very old house so Im not sure if bolting things to the wall will even help, as in it plaster so not sure it would even hold up...anyone else have the same problem?

  • No.  I have an old school parenting philosophy.  My parents didn't nail anything down and the six of us lived.  I play the odds.

  • You can use anchors to screw stuff into plaster walls.  You can buy the straps and hardware at BRU in the baby-proofing section :)  I imagine it would be pretty easy for a kid to topple a large piece of furniture; all they would have to do is climb, for example, the shelves of a tall entertainment unit, and it would topple down.

Do you not use car seats for the same reason?

  • I am not nailing furniture to the wall either. I don't really have any large pieces, and the ones I do, I set up a blockade so she can't go in that room.

We have the exact same problem.  We say our walls are made of graham cracker.  We're going to see if we can find studs behind our two tall bookcases.  If we can't we're not doing it.  For now he's never unsupervised in that room and if we need to leave he goes in the PNP.  I know that isn't going to work forever though.

  • I haven't strapped anything to the wall.  The only thing that DS could topple over is the entertainment center with the big flat screen on it, but we do not allow him to pull up on that.  There is nothing else in the living room/dining room/great room area other than couches and coffee tables.  I do not let him have run of the house so my large bedroom furniture is not a concern.

If I need to leave him unsupervised, he goes into the exersaucer.  When we are out of that phase, I will strap the entertainment center and tv to the wall.
