if you have hardwood floors..

..what playmat do you use for your LO to play on?

We have a small area rug in the living room I've been putting a blanket down and her floor gym on top, but now she's scooting and rolling and ends up on the hardwood. I need to get something asap but I don't know what! Please recommend what you use. Thanks!

  • We have an area rug and put either a blanket or a foam puzzle mat.  It isn't huge but DS isn't scooting around too much, so it works.

I was thinking about getting one of these, How big is yours?

  • We got this one from Costco.

It's two-sided, we have the letters side facing up.  We also have the traditional foam puzzle style mat in the living room and I love the Costco one a lot more.  It's softer and squishier.

  • I had a blanket down until he started scooting.  Now I just put him right on the wood floor - he doesn't seem to mind.  once they are crawling they will be on the wood all the time - unless you cover your whole house with foam!

This is what I'm thinking.  Our mat is only 3x3 but is really just there to keep him from hurting himself if he falls over while he's playing.  Once he starts scooting/crawling all bets are off and my only concern at that point will be keeping the floors clean!   Stick out tongue

  • Our DCP has wood floors and uses the foam alphabet puzzle letters. It's big enough for him to play on. $24.99 at BRU/TRU

We just got this one yesterday to cover the space that is not covered by the area rug. DS is crawling, and he pretty much likes to go everywhere but the foam mat and the area rug. Go figure. Even though he's a good crawler, he has hit his head on the hardwood a couple times already. I just try not to freak out, but he's fine. I think it's kind of pointless since they will learn to crawl everywhere they are not supposed to. Needless to say, supervision is the best way to prevent serious accidents.

  • We have a small house, so LO's main play space is our "formal" living room, so we wanted to avoid the playmat, and get some kind of rug. We got a peanut rug from a carpet store, which is the end of a carpet roll that they can't sell because it's too small. They finish the edges and sell them off cheap. We got a 9x12 rug for $125. We also got a pad, which sadly was about the same price. But for about $250, we have a huge rug, it looks and feels great and it won't damage our floors. I love it. ETA: LO is on the rug in my siggy.

  • We move the coffee table so DS can play on the area rug.  We are moving soon to a bigger house and plan on getting one of those big alphabet/number puzzle mat.
  • Thanks ladies for these suggestions! I definitely want to get something. With a 50lb boxer running in and out all day it's hard to keep the floor completely spotless. Our dog however won't go on DD's playmat jungle or touch any of her toys. So I just want to create her a bigger safe play area for the time being.

  • Something I came across on accident is to use a yoga mat.  Of course, it doesn;t take up tons of room, but it's good for a hallway or a small space. Plus, I already had one, so no extra money to spend.   I like it because LO is standing up all the time, and his feet slide out from under him on the wood floor.
