Hey all! My DH and I visited the Young School last week and are seriously considering it for our daycare, but would like additional opinions. Does anyone have any experience with it? We are thinking of using the one in Columbia...
I visited both locations of The Young School in Columbia (Kings Contrivance and Kendall Ridge) and really liked them both. I like their methodology and the whole REI concept, but ended up going with another daycare center because they seemed more flexible and the location worked better for us. But if you go with TYS, I am sure your little one will be in very good hands.
I worked there in HS and really loved the atmosphere. I dont have any experience with it as a parent, however a friend of mine has a DD there and she loves it!
As a teacher who got a student from the Young school this year I did not feel he was well prepared academically for kindergarten according to either Howard County or MD standards (we fill out a rating scale for each student in the fall about their readiness for school in several areas). I am not sure if your LO will be there that long but just thought you should know how it could impact them later on.

From the perspective of a public policy researcher working primarily on early childhood education and school readiness studies, I will say this: your sample size is ONE child. As an educator, I'm sure you understand that there are many factors other than preschool (which this child attended for an undetermined amount of time) influencing a child's school readiness. One child is not representative of all children.
Also, TYS is one of the few preschools in the area to be accredited by the Maryland State BOE. That alone doesn't make it better than others, but it means that they take education seriously. Like all other accredited schools, they undergo regular evaluations by the state.
I don't want to take away from your experience as a teacher, but please don't make a public global warning (or even head's up) without thinking of the validity of it.
I completely understand this. However, when anyone asks for a rec, either good or bad, from ANY parent or otherwise for their experience with a daycare or preschool it is an opinion and experience with 1 child only. I was only providing what was asked for from a different perspective, not making a warning. At no point did I say "DO NOT send your child here, it is an awful place."
The child I was speaking of is absolutely delightful, I was only speaking of what I saw academically and otherwise, when he began in my classroom and knowing he came from the school mentioned in the initial post.

My friend has her daughter there and loves it. That said, we felt like while the infant rooms rocked, the rest of the center always seemed chaotic and unorganized. That said, we did have a hard time choosing between this center and Knowledge beginnings.
