Success after IF

How many + from IVF w PGD

We were just advised today that due to a chromosomal defect we are going to have to do IVF w PGD. I am just interested in the BFP and any personal experience you care to share. TIA

Re: How many + from IVF w PGD

  • First of all I'm sorry that this is the road you have to travel now.... but there is something to be said about getting some answers.  IVF w/ PGD was the only option we had to get a BFP that would actually stick and would have potential to be a healthy child that would live.  We had 2 late first tri losses due to the gene defect and then my son who's had multiple heart surgeries and a long hard road (there's some pics of him in my bio)....

We did it because I have a weirdo genetic defect that caused those severe cardiac issues with my son.  It was a long process (since they had to create probes for our embryos).  It added an additional $5k to the cost of our IVF cycle.  And out of 16 eggs that we got at ER we only ended up with 2 healthy embryos (we put them both back and are now pregnant with a singleton).

The wikipedia page for PGD actually offers a pretty decent technical explanation - there are basically 2 different kinds - they can look at single genes or they can look at chromosomes.

It's essentially a lot like any IVF cycle with an added step.  You stim, have an ER, they use ICSI to fertilize the eggs (because if they don't tons of sperm bond to the outside of the egg and your cell sample could contain sperm DNA instead of embryo DNA).  On day 3 they cut a hole in the side of the embryo's with a laser and remove a single cell (they'll do this to any embie that has a minimum of 6 cells).  They ship the cell samples off to the genetics lab where they look for abnormalities.  And then if all goes as planned on day 5 they let you know which (if any) of your embryos are "healthy" and suitable for transfer.

Here's the rundown of what we got...

    16 eggs at ER - 13 mature and ICSI'd

    12 of 13 fertilized

10 of 12 fert. normally - 2 fert. abnormally (triploidy)

on day 3: 7 out of 10 embies large enough for biopsy

(what happened to the other 3: 2 only had 5 cells and 1 had stopped growing)

on day 5: all 7 embryos still alive and growing nicely

    PGD report:

4 of the 7 embies were affected with the genetic defect we were trying to avoid

2 were healthy and recommended for transfer

1 was inconclusive for the gene defect but had chromosomal abnormalities

I'm happy to answer any other questions!!!

    Hannah

  • Due to recuring pregnancy loss, we are getting ready to do this started Nov. 12.   The above post does a good job of describing it.  We are using reprogenetics lab.   https://www.reprogenetics.com/   Your Dr. should be able to provide you with stats on the procedure.
  • We also used Reprogenetics
