s/o deli meat...caffeine?

How strict were you on cutting caffeine? Cut it out completely, just cut back or kept it in your diet as normal?

Re: s/o deli meat...caffeine?

  • Sounds like I was pretty much the only stickler on the board.  I didn't have ANY deli meat and the only caffeine I allowed myself was in the 3rd tri when I would have a handful of regular m&ms once a week.  I also never had a drop of alcohol.  Basically, whatever they told me not to do, I obeyed.  The biggest "rule" I broke was I slept on my back the entire pregnancy--albeit on a big cloud of pillows..

  • I allowed myself one caffeinated beverage per day.  Most of the time it was a cup of coffee in the morning, although I would very rarely have a soda in the afternoon.

  • followed my dr's (and all pg books i read) advice to limit it to 200mg or less a day.  that's like 3 cokes a day, which is more than i ever drink, so I didn't actually change my habits at all.

  • I didn't really start drinking coffee until after DS was born but I would occasionally get a half-caff coffee or a soda but not a regular basis. I ate deli meat and chocolate normally.
  • I cut it out completely (even ::gasp:: chocolate), but like I said in the other post, I'm insane.

It was/is relatively easy for me, though, because I don't drink coffee ever and I only drink sodas occasionally.

My logic is that it's a stimulant and a drug and the babe will have his/her whole life to be exposed to that and get hooked. At the very least I can block that exposure while he/she is developing.

    Dear Bump: You suck.
  • I had a bit of chocolate, but no caffeinated beverages at all.  Wait, I had one diet coke the day I got my BFP because it was on a Friday and DH said it would be too cruel to my students to go to work in the midst of caffeine withdrawal.  :)

  • I didn't drink coffee or soda at all with Jakob, but I hadn't been in the habit so it was no big deal.

I had a cup of coffee every morning with Layna, and sometimes another cup in the afternoon.  I don't drink soda, so again it wasn't a big deal.

My doctor actually rec'd at least one caffeine beverage a day to help with headaches.  He said all the hysteria about caffeine was 'hogwash'

  • I had one soda a day while I ate lunch or as an afternoon thing. Jack got quiet mid afternoon and it would worry me so I'd drink one to wake him up. I tried cutting it out but the caffeine headaches were more than I could handle. I didn't drink very much and most of the time I barely finished the one I did open. I always had regular and never diet because I was worried about the diet stuff in it.....I know, I'm weird.

    WOOT!

  • I didn't have caffiene in the first trimester. After that, I had one diet soda a day.

  • I don't really like chocolate, so that hasn't been an issue. I've had some, but not enough to do anything. I hadn't had any caffeine until about 2 hours ago when I drank what I thought was a generic diet 7up but in fact it was not.. and I am jittery right now. My brain is going faster than my fingers can type.

I think anyone that is following their doctors orders 'strictly' is being a stickler, so I think even I would fall into this category, with my coke in hand!

I guess that is my reasoning...I had read online last night that caffiene can pass through the placenta and the baby cannot metabolize it like we can...understandable. Just wanted to get everyone's take on this. My sister didn't cut out any at all and then I thought some of you guys had completely. I'll probably try to wean myself off of it...I'm getting headaches from not having it I think. Or maybe headaches from the baby? I dunno.

Caffeine withdrawal is awful.  I had an easier time withdrawing from nicotine than I do caffeine.

ETA:  My point being, the headaches are likely from the lack of caffeine

  • I tried to cut it out completely last time because I had read about the miscarriage risks, etc, but I was desperate for it due to the wicked headaches, I allowed myself one a day.  Plus my doctor TOLD ME to drink it with the tylenol to help the headaches.

This time, I had gotten into a bad habit again before we found out I was pg, but I've cut back to one/day again.  The bubbles just taste soooo damn good.

And l've also read about how caffiene contributes to low birth weight.  Hmm  I had an 8 lb, 4 oz baby last time and this time after they pegged my edd at my first appointment (with a follow up the next week to confirm), this baby is now measuring FIVE days ahead.

I think its one of those things where as long as you enjoy in moderation, you're fine.

  • I didn't crave a lot of sweets when I was PG so skipping chocolate wasn't much of a problem.  I did limit my soda intake to 1-per-day, though.

This was me, too.  Except I had tea instead of coffee.  I did drink Coke a few times toward the end of my pg.  I had super cravings for it, which was weird.  And I had one for every meal at the hospital after giving birth.  :)

I know. If I wasn't obviously pregnant, I'd have to give up my woman card for that one.

  • I stayed under the 200mg. recommendation. I avoided artificial sweeteners too.
  • I never drank caffeine before I was PG, so I never did while I was PG either.  I think if I was a caffeine drinker, I would have just cut it back - not completely out.
  • I would have stuck to my one cup of morning coffee, but I felt horrible my first trimester and the smell/thought of coffee made me want to barf.  Once I was able to stomach it, any kind of caffiene (not chocolate) made me jittery and light headed so I pretty much avoided it.  I enjoyed having hot herbal teas in the morning, esp. the blueberry and peach flavors.
  • i cut it out completely.

wait - i'm seeing all the posts above about cutting out chocolate.  i did not do that!!  no way!!

i just stopped drinking caffenated beverages -- coffee & soda.

chocolate -- bring it!! i don't have the willpower to resist chocolate while pregnant!

  • My Dr. told me to keep it under 300 mg a day. Some days I had a Coke or a cup of coffee (not much though- the smell of coffee started making me sick), others I had none.
  • I have one small cup of coffee in the morning, I can't function without it! But I don't drink soda so that's usually it for caffeine intake. Along with the occasional chocolate - hey, I do want my husband to still love me, he might not if I gave up both;)

  • I would have chocolate often. Our diet is so limited (na dairy, egg, nuts, soy) that it was hard to give up our "safe" dessert. Then around the beginning of 3rd trimester we found out that our baby developed PACs (heart arrhythmias) and oftentimes, caffeine is a contributing factor. So I cut all chocolate out. (Wasn't drinking coffee or sodas to begin with). Her PACs seem like they're gone now (at 38 weeks), which is great and my lesson for the future...
  • I still drank my 1 diet coke a day.

  • The only time I ate deli meat was at 11 weeks after I got off the plane in Pheonix after not eating all day.  I thought I was going to pass out in the airport.

The first tri I stuck with a decaf, peppermint mocha from SB once a week.  I drank it for flavor more than anything.  Then once I made it to second tri I switched to a caffeinated, peppermint mocha weekly.  I think everything in moderation is fine.

  • I've given up caffiene, with the exception of chocolate.  My reasoning is that I only have chocolate once or twice a week, maybe.  I used to drink black tea every morning and then 3 or 4 cups of coffee on the weekends.

I was really surprised that I didn't have any withdrawal symptoms after giving up both caffiene and booze cold turkey at the same time.  I kind of like giving up things like caffiene or alcohol every once in a while to prove to myself that I don't *need* it, I just like it.

  • I work nights. Enough said. My kids are lucky I didn't take any of my prescription anti-narcoleptic drugs. A cup of coffee at 4am is better than driving into a telephone pole on my way home from work. Now that would have definitely been bad for their health. I did "cut back".
